Or let them Default like Greece.

Bail them out you are throwing cash down an outhouse, let them default no telling what happens with stock market dropping 350 today because of Euro problems

Here we go. Now he is a stock expert.
My holdings went down the stinker today Dango. I guess I should sell, right? ;)

Not really
Well what stock is there out there that is cheap right now?? I dumped my 401k as soon as I could but I would buy back in cheap.

But I doubt you are going to find anything in the stock market as profitable as a herd of mama cows right now

Detroit, the city, went bankrupt.

Puerto Rico will do the same (or achieve a similar outcome through concessions from creditors.)

The Federal government has a long history of not bailing out local governments.

I can't wait to buy some stock on the cheap after Greece gets saved at the last minute.
By "saved at the last minute" do you mean "the can is kicked down the road for another 6-12 months?"

The EU is unwilling to pay for/forgive a material amount of Greece's debt, and Greece is not yet willing to default. One of those two actions is the ultimate end game. This next proposed Greece/EU deal is just a temporary salve.

Yes. Then I'll buy some more then. It'll be awesome.

You dumped your 401k? Huh? Are you playing a long game or a short game? Why would you not invest in the stock market when bonds give you no return and interest rates are low? Why would you invest in individual stocks for your 401k?

The bailout stuff started before Obama was president. Seems like I recall John McCain suspending his campaign to rush back to Washington to offer his help on such matters.

My biotech funds returned 61% in the past 12 months and I didn't have to screw with feed, manure, etc. Enjoy.

well lets say you have $100,000 to invest, stock market long term is going to average about a 7% gain long term. about a $7000 growth a year with an actual in your pocket income of absolutily zero.

$100,000 will buy me about 40 bred heifers, out of which we normally will get 32-33 calves to sell. Yesterday Joplin Stockyards were at $235-$254 for 700 pound yearlings or about $1700 per calf. My cost is about $400 per animal to market ( I have no debt)

So I turn a profit of around $1300 per animal X 33 animals for a net return before taxes of about $43,000 in one year IN MY POCKET from an investment of $100,000. Amost zero risk but a bit of work and sweat. And I will have that income from those mama cows for about the next 8-10 years before they are culled and sold.

Why would I want that money setting in any Stock based investment?? Which could be gone if the stock market tanks again?

I doubt they returned anything in your pocket. Are you telling me you got a check in the mail for $61,000 on a $100,000 investment?? Cash in your pocket return??

Or are you saying your account value went up 61% because of the overinflated price of the stock ???

1) No one is looking to get anything short term from their 401k. If you want a check in hand then you invest outside of it.

2) Working cattle is hard. Not a ton of people want to do it, and a lot of people can't do it if they live in a city.

3) You're also at the mercy of cattle prices, which are not the most stable of markets.

As fun as buying 30 head of cattle and raising them in my back yard sounds, I'll probably just stick to my 401k.

Three clicks of my mouse and I'm invested.
No machinery, trucks, equipment needed.
No time, sweat, or tears necessary.

It's really not hard about 90% of the time. I'm still affected by the cattle market on the commercial side but I'm building a base of customers for my all natural grass fed steers. I can pretty much control the price of that now.

We are working on eliminating equipment. It's just a drain on your profit margin. My cattle are bringing in a little over a 66% profit margin.

I live in a fair size city. Where should I raise cattle? What if I have no knowledge of raising cattle? What if I have no time or interest in getting up early and working cattle for hours a day?

They have some programs where people from the city can buy interests in cows on a farm. The knowledge thing has not stopped a lot of people from the city in buying 10 acres and thinking that they can put 10 cows on it. They usually don't last long. Most of them are too smart to listen.
As for the hours a day, if I averaged it out per day for the year it would be about 45 minutes. That is some days with doing nothing and some days of working 8 or more hours.

I see that as an investment in people who know what they're doing, not necessarily working the cattle.

Really, 45 min? When my grandpa worked cows, it was truly a 12+ hour day. He raised dairy cows though so maybe you're talking something different.

Not trying to make anybody mad, but doesn't raising livestock have it's risk much like the market?

Dairy is different. Milking twice a day and procuring feed and feeding and cleaning the milk barn. They do grass fed milking also. They have a new system that the cow can basically come up to the barn and get milked when they want to. Takes a lot of labor out.
Unless I'm working cows or calving all I have to do is open a gate to let them to a new pasture, check the herd as it walks by and put out mineral and salt. I averaged in the approximate time fencing and mowing.

I've quit the cow calf thing in favor of backgrounding calves. I can run 60 head easily and other than time getting a new batch started (doing so now) about 2 hrs a day for a week, it then only takes 30 minutes top to feed and count them daily. In the winter I spend another 30 minutes about 3 times a week feeding hay. This years crop made me 22.5% but that is for about 9 months. Last year was over 80% and the year before 21%. I've said I can't imagine having cows again but flexibility with cattle is a plus.
