How much does a school stand to lose if they play down a class or even 2 classes?

Correct answer. But also remember you can get a higher point total if your opponents have a good record versus bad records (the true "strength of schedule" part of the formula). For a class 3 team, it's better to beat a 4-5 class one school than beat a 3-6 class 3 team (final records as of end of week nine).

My post above is a bit confusing, but look at it this way as far as strength of schedule within the formula.

Class 4 West Plains would actually have a higher district rating by beating a 1-8 class one school by 13 points than by beating class 4 Hillcrest by 100 points, assuming class 4 Hillcrest finished 0-9.

Correct re: the 13 part. But my post is 100% accurate in that West Plains would earn a higher district rating by beating a class one team by 13 points which finishes with a 1-8 record than if they beat class four Hillcrest by 100, assuming Hillcrest finishes 0-9.

In both cases WP gets the +13, but their Strength of Schedule factor is better by beating a 1-8 team than beating an 0-9 team, assuming both are in their same class or lower.

The thread was initially about getting penalized or not for playing down. My point is you don't get penalized per say, but what is important besides winning, and margin of victory (maximum +13), is the overall record of your opponents besides what they did against you.

West Plains beats Hillcrest by 13+ and Hillcrest finishes 0-9.

Carl Junction beats lowly East Newton by 13+ and the Newt finishes 1-8, this gives CJ a slightly better district rating than WP in these specific games only. Then of course the other 8 games come into play.

True but CJ only plays up one game so only gets 10 points for playing us. West Plains plays up 2 classes in 2 games and up 1 class in 6 of their games so they get 100 points. If West Plains loses by 28 points to Kickapoo and Carl Junction beats Lamar by 7 then both teams get 27 points before SOS is calculated.

Basically if WP only loses one game they will finish seeded higher than CJ even if they run the table and Hillcrest in same district probably will not be 8 seed even if they go 0-9.

Totally agree. In this specific district even if CJ goes undefeated and beats everyone by 13 or more (a big if), and West Plains goes 7-2, it will be tight. Most likely comes down to whether WP lost those games by big +13 margins or not.

WP's SOS is going to be based on .500, as all of their opponents play each other.

CJ's SOS may be a bit over the .500 or a bit under, depending on how Central does. The Big 8 opponents each have their one extra game where Cassville lost to Mt. Grove, but Lamar will beat Butler. These little things could settle second place in district 5 class 4 if CJ wins out and WP loses twice.

Heck, a team even gets a slight boost if one of their opponents' losses was an overtime game against someone else.

Sort of a good formula overall with a very few slight flaws.
