We have over 570 high schools playing basketball in Missouri this year. We are in a difficult time for sports in America today then the past. We have players in professional sports not respecting the American flag like we did in the past.

I'm asking our high school coaches, school administrators, parents and fans to plan ahead for this to happen in high school sports. The school administration should make it a school policy for athletes to stand for the playing of our national anthem and school song! Do we have any school districts with a policy on the above?

Should coaches include the above into their team rules or wait until it happens and deal with parents and fans @ that time?

Missouri high school basketball Coaches, I'm asking you if you have a player disrespecting the National Anthem by not standing, does this kid or kids play tonight?

Donald Trump is asking team owners in the NFL to terminate players contracts who do not stand for the playing of our National Anthem. Are you with the Donald?

Just wait a while and post the names of coaches losing their jobs for trying to fight something like this....the ACLU will be all over it. I would say you better gage the opinions of the community you are in and talk to your admin before making any decisions.

Dude..... We are indeed living in a different & difficult world today. Doubtful we'll see much of the described disrespect out here in the sticks.

A few years back I attended a game at a larger (nameless) NCMC school and witnessed
closeup a large cluster of adults that refused to comply with the announcers request for "everyone to please stand, remove your hats and face the flag for the singing of the National Anthem by HS student ___ ___."
Not only did they NOT stand, they continued to talk loudly... Sad.!

*Just back from a very enjoyable Anniversary scenic byway cruze in TN-NC in the
red fastback pony. Petro in NC was 2.69... Filled up in Potosi fer 2.15...
Enjoy the fall..... ... .. .O o- C =\~

How do you fight " Freedom of Speech", it's your constitutional right to disrespect the very institution that protects those rights. It's a catch-22. I don't agree with what's going on but just because you disagree doesn't make you right or wrong. It simply means you have a different opinion.

Does freedom of speech extend to your workplace? Can anybody on any job get away with protesting something they don't like at work?

I am old enough to remember that we went thru something like this 40 years ago with the Vietnam war, Burning the flag and Riots. Also the Olympic athletes raising their fists on the podium. I remember we had a kid in an assembly not stand for the National Anthem. I am not sure now how that was handled. Today with all the social media it becomes a nationwide incident and people all over the country can give their opinions.
Even though their are many problems in our country as there always has been since 1776, We still live in the greatest country in the world. We are so blessed we live here instead of Venzueala, China, Cuba, Russia, Iran, Iraq or similar countries. What would happen in those countries if you tried to protest. No, we should not bury our head in the sand against social ills in this country because protest was what this country was built on. It is even written in the Declaration of Independence that we have that right to protest even in a violent way. No, I would not protest by not standing but who is to say if thought the cause was right I would not be a part of a protest. School boards need to make a policy and not leave it up to individual coach.

Would be an interesting legal case if a coach working in a public school punished a player for exercising his/her free speech rights.

A cheerleader from Georgia Tech drop to a knee during the National anthem over the weekend. Her hero is Colin Kaepernick. It appear being " Disrespectful " is the big thing for the fall. We may have a few high school coaches, administrators and school board members doing the " Knee Drop " during the 2017-18 school year. These knee droppers will be the first to call the police when they get into a troubled situation. The question is if you are a " Knee Dropper " like Lebron James and Kobe Bryant, will the police take extra time coming to your rescue?

I wonder of the owners that locked arms with their players which one will give Kaepernick a job? I hear he is better than some starters and most backups right now.

It's being reported that an NFL owner can fire one or more players for any reason. The players could file a complaint but they most likely would not win their case against an NFL owner. College basketball and football players better be careful as well, they also can be released. Caution should be used when protesting against the American flag.

He is not even as good as you 3r. If he was good enough to be a starter he would be playing.

While we are on the subject. Make sure all the people who want to come down on those disrespecting the national anthem do not go to Arrowhead Stadium as they say actually change the words of the anthem at the end. But wait, the people that do this aren't actually standing up for anything. They are doing it because the beer and peanut guy thinks it's cool. Please. Don't throw stones when you live in a glass house. I've yet to see a thread on here about how that is disrespectful.

I wouldn't have any idea myself, I haven't watched more than 5 minutes of a regular season NFL game in years and not much more in the playoffs. You think different anybody I've seen talking about him on TV and again I have no idea if they know any more than you or me. I do know he had a job in the NFL until he started his crusade.

You are right he was a marginal starting QB until he put himself in the lime light. I don't think he is a bad guy as I have read that he has done good work in his community and donated substantial sums of money to those who fit his cause. In fact I think him and many like him that take a knee are outstanding people and I have no qualms with them doing what they are Doesn't mean I agree with it..

So how well do we think these protesting thugs acts would go over in say maybe Syria?

Come on Missouri high school coaches--What will you do if a roster player does not stand for the national anthem? Will the kid play basketball that night? MoSportstaff posted " The ACLU " will get involved if the kid is treated differently then the respectful players! Come on coaches--What say you?

Who cares? Do you want the US to be like Syria? What a worthless standard for judgment.

Neutron Monster, do you know anyone who needs a " Knee Pad " when the Anthem is being played @ your next sporting event? I'm not saying you need a knee pad but you might know someone who does. I am sending a knee pad to one of my friends in Sikeston, Missouri to be used @ a Sikeston football game.

Metro what is your infatuation with the issue? Tell us how you really feel. Read Nick Saban's comments about it when asked by a veteran. Spot on

Cant-coach, I disagree with disrespecting the Flag, Police, Military and Teachers. I guessing you are with me on this one or do you need a " Knee Pad? " Please respond?

I did read the Nick Saban comments but I also read Urban Meyer's comments as well.

I would think that since participation in extra-curricular activities/sports is a privilege and not a right, a coach or administration could have rules set in place for player behavior during the National Anthem.
It’s not the classroom where students can opt out of the pledge of allegiance, for whatever reasons.
The question I would have for an athlete who wanted to kneel would be why they feel the need to draw attention away from the team and onto themselves.

Metro, I believe you, like a lot of America, is missing the entire point of why some are kneeling for the anthem. It has nothing to do their views of the military. They feel there is injustice in America and want the issue discussed. They feel the issue continues to get pushed to the back burner. Race is a topic that a majority want to avoid. Avoiding it will never fix the issue. And to say that race isn't an issue in America today is bold face lie. It may not affect you personally, but it is still a real life issue many face daily.

Then add in the fact that the president is calling for pro athletes jobs if they kneel and it added more fuel to the fire. You would think he would have more important matters to attend to than picking a fight with the pro athletes. That's a battle he will likely lose

To answer your question....no I will not kneel for the anthem. However, I respect others opinions and views. By no means am I going to judge those that kneel, think they are in the wrong, or not be open to their views. Metro, your sarcastic badgering of the issue and needing a "knee pad" is where I have a problem.

Coaches are in a tough spot with the entire issue regardless of their beliefs. If they force all players to do one thing they risk losing (trust and loyalty not quitting or kicked off) members of their team. If the entire team doesn't have complete faith in the coach then it will be difficult for that team to be successful. Coaches have players from many different backgrounds and have to get them to understand each other to be successful. So taking a hard line stance as a coach is not likely the route they should go. Especially if the coach is from a completely different culture and background themselves

I'll be curious to see how Greg Popovich handles it. He's a military guy, but also one of the best coaches of molding a team with so many different backgrounds. If he allows his players to kneel while supporting them to do so than will you, Metro, bash him as well?

What they're really protesting is the POLICE, those protect them when they go out protest in the streets. Why don't they protest all the people of color killing other people of color at a rate the police can't keep even up with. THAT is the huge racial injustice in this country. The number of people of color killed by police is small fraction of those killed by by people in their own neighborhood. I don't know about every case out there but MOST of them I have any knowledge of the person shot by a policeman failed to comply with direct orders from the policemen. If they had done what they were told pretty much all them would be alive today! They should all lock arms and march through the streets of the cities where killings are taking place by the gangs and drug dealers!!! Maybe they can get through to those involved in that.

3Rfan, what you have posted is correct but some fans do not want to hear the truth or to offend someone. If you have noticed few or no coaches have responded what they will do if one or more of their roster players do not stand for the national anthem. I was only trying to help by getting the administration involved and on record if it happens in one of our 550 plus high schools in Missouri. One poster did respond that the " ACLU" might get involved if discipline was used for not standing for the national anthem.

I have a police friend in the St. Louis area who stated to me, he is called a " Pig " or other names and gets the finger nearly every shaft that he works. He also said, he hugs his kids ever day before going to work and being a policeman is not an easy job. I'm guessing the coaching profession will be more difficult as disrespect for teachers, police, military and people in charge continues.
