You forgot SEMO.

This may be a dumb question to most, but I dont really wanna dig too far into research myself and I know there a lot of knowledgeable people on this site. Is NCAA football classification based off enrollment? Always questioned why some schools play Div 1-AA in football and Div 1 in basketball (im old so still use D-1 and II, etc) like Mo State. Mo State has a larger enrollment than Ark State but Ark State plays D-1. So was just curious why some play in a lower division.

It comes down to the amount of scholarships that are available for specific teams set in certain limitations by the NCAA.

Just think D1 football 90 to 120...D2to 30 to 40 . D3 0. An exception for the eight Ivy League schools they have zero scholarships but they are Division 1

There are a couple of conferences that don't offer scholarships that are division 1. It is based on how much the school wants to give out scholarships or " FREE" education. The smallest division 1 school I believe is Baylor with about 3000 students. Where Central Florida is the largest with 57000

I think Baylor has over 16,000 students, I’m pretty sure the Air Force Academy and West Point are the 2 smallest in FBS. I know Tulsa U has a small enrollment as well

Cool thanks. This article was saying it also depends on the number of male and female sports they participate in? I have always wondered why some teams play multiple divisions between sports. Thanks again for the article, question answered.
