Rumor is a well known coach in the Ozark Conference quit after a run in with an AAU basketball coach at practice on Friday.

Had a senior averaging 20 a game quit a few weeks ago.

Why would an AAU coach be at practice??

It was a scrimmage that had spectators. I have no idea what happened and don't know anything about the situation other than that. Hope things work themselves out.

Too bad outside influences come in to a man's practice and causes such a disruption. Maybe it is time to go back to the way it was before schools sponsored teams, let the "experts" coach outside the parameters of school. Schools could play intramurals a lot cheaper than sponsoring school teams.

Well, I think we all know who this coach is. Recent tweets seem to indicate things are okay or back to normal.

Anyway, at another OC school, who've got a certain AAU coach meeting with players the morning of the games to give them pep talks and coaching them from the stands during games.

Things are out of control and I don't know what can be done about it.

For us from St. Louis area, which schools and AAU program is involved here?

And there is an AAU program that has player meetings before games? That's crazy.

Not only meetings before games, but "win today and I'll take you to such-and-such bowling alley", etc.

It isn't working either considering we're having the worst varsity season in school history.

Actually, I don't want to see Yanders go away, I just want him to send some of his guys to Glendale. We're clearly hooked up with the lesser AAU group.

Tyler Williamson quit Lebanon.

It seems to be a theme these days though so definitely not nearly as big of a deal as it would have been 20 years ago.

I guess if the coach is doing the same or threatening to do the same then you can;t really blame him.

If you're having the type of seasons that Lebanon and Glendale are, people are going to be angry and nerves will be pushed to their social media limits. That's why it's best to avoid (at all costs) these types of seasons. Although with young, inexperienced players, injuries, and COVID shutdowns, it's been hard to avoid for some. I just know Glendale has only been like this twice before in 58 years (6-20 in '91-'92 & '95-'96). The next worst season was Williamson's last one in 2012-13 (10-15 overall).

Sure HS kids, you can now "opt out" also, and you should since a coach somewhere quit one time, or something. This is a great trend for the game.

That's not how I meant it. Pretty inarticulate phrasing on my part, so understandable.

I meant if everyone has decided it's okay for the kids to quit then we should make the same allowance for the coach.

However, to be clear, I was being a little fecetious. I'm not a fan of anyone quitting in the middle of the season.

It seems weird that an AAU coach would be at a Lebanon practice because how many AAU level players could they possibly have?

A coach is under contract and gets a paycheck, not so for the kids. If he has outside influences messing with his kids at school he should have the administration take care of that.

In regard to the situation at Lebanon, the AAU coach in question was asked to leave the gym and did so with help from the AD.

Coach Brown is still out. He’s done. The family that was bitching about him was why he won’t come back. Neither of their 2 sons is worth a squirt, but hey—if you have money you’re used to people kissing your ass. And the AAU “coach” in question has been telling them for years their sons were great. (Not sure I would call someone coaching games at The Fieldhouse but never ever ever in front of college coaches an AAU coach.)

I think this may be my first ever post on here, but figured I better share what I can. I was at the open scrimmage held on February 12 at Lebanon. Shockley was there because his daughter plays at Central and they had a game at Lebanon that afternoon, so he was in the gym watching some of the players he helps "coach" during the summer. He walks into the gym and Brown politely asks him to leave, and he refused. Brown went and got the AD, and when they came back into the gym, one parent started giving Brown an earful. The parent who was chewing Brown out for no reason is also the Mayor of Lebanon's brother and told him he was going to do everything he could to get him fired that night. After back-and-forth banter, Brown tosses his keys to the AD and says he is out and done. The parent has two kids on the team (junior and freshman), and both are awful to put things nicely.
Both the kids are awful. But the “coach” in question loves cashing those checks, so he keeps telling the parents they’re great. The junior should never see the floor. The frosh could’ve been ok if the “coach” had never gotten ahold of him. It’s sad. Good for Coach Brown. Enough is sometimes enough.

The coach who quit could have closed the gym for practice (with admin help). He is under contract and should have finished the season, even if he takes so heat from parents. The season is over in a few weeks.

This is chronic problem lots of places. Parent interference.. Way past time for the supportive good parents to speak up and Admin to stop this nonsense. You will see a serious erosion of coaches that should be coaching that will not. Already happening honestly. Enough is enough!

Most coaches are sick of having their livelihoods threatened cause they didn't play Turnover Johnny enough, and now they have to compete for the space in their players' heads with AAU Legend Coach/Trainer who never has to win a game, much less get actual education, certification, background checks, and training. School admins and MSHSAA can either head this off or watch the pool of experienced school coaches dwindle even further.
You are 100% correct. It is in all sports, I am all for doing what is best for the kid, and sometimes that means putting your ego aside to help the player. But AAU coaches and travel org need to do the same....stay in your lane.

I would say eligibility of athletes dealing with their aau coach during season should be looked at. The state can set back and let this go but it will only get worse if screws don't get tighten. Yes coach under contract but that can be broken by either party, usually nothing to school but for coach a fine or payback amount on contract.

For some context...

Pre-Brown
'09-'10 - Lebanon 3-6 (7-18)
'10-'11 - Lebanon 1-8 (9-18)
'11-'12 - Lebanon 4-5 (10-17)
'12-'13 - Lebanon 0-9 (1-24)
'13-'14 - Lebanon 0-9 (10-17)
'14-'15 - Lebanon 2-7 (7-20)
'15-'16 - Lebanon 3-6 (6-20)
'16-'17 - Lebanon 3-6 (13-15)
'17-'18 - Lebanon 1-8 (11-16)

Bill Brown
'18-'19 - Lebanon 5-3* (13-11)
'19-'20 - Lebanon 7-2 (17-10)

This season has been very tough, but Lebanon lost a lot from its best group since the mid-2000's.

Coach Brown was not on the bench for Lebanon's game on Friday at Rolla. Seems like that might confirm it ... Given the nature of the score it's probably safe to assume there are other problems then just the coach.

I personally can not think of another example of a coach throwing in the towel in the middle of the season. The only examples anyone I know can come up with of a coach resigning in the middle of the season were due to an illness, injury or an allegation of an untoward relationship with a student.

I think pretty highly of coach Brown and he certainly has a track record in the sport, so if things were bad enough for him to resign then that says more about the situation than it does him IMO.

If MSHSAA would just outlaw all workouts during the season, except with the hs team, that would fix some of the problems. Not all, but just some, It is only getting worse. P.R.I.S.E academy is suppose to open up in Columbia in August. From their website

Lol. Jesus. There are frauds in every aspect of life.

No mention of increasing their social media presence? Amateurs.

I should say I don't have a dog in this hunt and know nothing about the situation and the coach. I wish him luck. I just think many schools will not hire him because he didn't fulfill his contract.
