Closing KC Schools

So, what schools will be left and if all the central and northeast students stay in public schools how big will the remaining schools be?

West closed after the 80-81 school year and did not start up until 69-70.

Manual closed after the 76-77 school year.

Metro started up in 92 with FB but shut down in 1999.

Paseo stopped playing FB in 1990. They became a Fine Arts school and are now just starting to do some athletics again. Before this year, I think they went to Central for athletics.

East shut down FB for a while from 2000 to 2010. I think it may have closed for a year and then when Van Horn switched to Independence, they reopened for a year as Van Horn KC then switched back to East.

Note that also for a time, along with Lincoln, RT Coles was the vocational black HS and I think, along with Lincoln also played FB.

I was a late 80s - early 90s kid. Anthony Peeler, the pride of Paseo, who went on to a lengthy NBA career. Derek Hood, one of the most dominant high school players I've ever seen at Central went on to play for Nolan Richardson's national champion Arkansas teams.
It will be sad to see these schools close. For some reason I keep picturing Southeast in much rougher shape on the outside than Central.
The large Hispanic population around East and Van Horn in recent years has led to a good amount of success in soccer. Quite the rivalry has developed. There is a nice soccer venue over there as well.

Jack Bush was a legend in Kansas City area basketball.

Moved to Central High School in 1968, where he led the Blue Eagles for 33 years. In all, Bush’s teams won 799 games and led the Blue Eagles to twelve final four appearances and one state title in 1979.

That hair of his was something to see.

Southeast had a wide receiver in the early eighties named Lorenzo Hicks. He went on to play at Nebraska. One of the very best that I have seen come out of the KC area. If I recall correctly, he and Brian McRae out of Blue Springs were the all metro receivers their senior years.

June James from Southeast went on to play college ball at Texas and spent a couple of years in the NFL I believe. Also, former Mizzou Tiger and San Diego Charger Russ Washington was a SE grad.

I saw East just made the state championships in soccer. They will play Glendale Friday. According to MSHSAA this is the first time a boy's team has made the final 4 in any sport since the mid 70s. Even crazier their earliest state appearance was winning the state championship in basketball in 1929!

Actually their boys TF team was 4th in 76, 77 and 93. Their girls TF team was 4th in 96.

TL;DR Hogan Prep is closing down this week due to safety concerns. Fights, allowing strangers in, etc. If the school doesn't fix the issues, the state may permanently shut the school down.

One of the all time great characters of the MO HS scene. One of my favs was when he'd hide a player amongst the cheerleaders when the opposing team shot FTs. Saw it get a bucket in person more than once, including the game vs Raytown at Municipal.

First thing I thought was that Phil Lascoula was no longer there. But, according to MSHSAA, he still is.

I think it is a brand new building this year as well. Geesh!
Yes. The building has more than $1 million poured into it too. Channel 4 show cased the building back just before this school year started. It looked super nice. Lots of modern and state of the art class rooms.
