Im just interested on what others think about this district and who they think will win out of the first round, second round, and overall win the district. Interesting district with every team having a record of 5-3 or better besides 1 (Ruskin)

I have not seen Smith-Cotton play but if Carthage has Derryberry I think they are a size able favorite to win the district.

TigersSEC1968 you are confident in sedalia-sc even though they are a class 5 school playing a weak schedule playing class 3 schools..

True Probably too much credit. But they beat Republic 42-14. And Republic beat Willard. Belton isn't that good. They got turbo clocked last week. They kind of slide in there by default.

Carthage is your district champion!

If the standings stay the same, sc and carthage gets a bye, neosho walks over ruskin and belton hosts willard at home. Can see Belton being a very quite but team that can shock this district.

Belton has a very good running back, and a nice offensive cast around him. They will score points.. It will all depend on if the can out score the opposing team in a shoutout though because their defense is porous..

Belton got turbo clocked by Kearney in the 3rd quarter last week. I just don't see them doing much.

They won't stand a chance against Carthage, but I think they will have a shot at winning the first round.

Kearney might turbo 5 out of the 6 teams in this district..

Should be interesting to see how the Willard/Carthage game plays out tonight. Willard's defense has not been great this year but their offense has been pretty good and they moved the ball very well on Carthage last year. Obviously Carthage is the favorite for good reason but that's why they play the game.

With Carthage unable to leap over Sedalia, they will most likely have to rematch Neosho who was my other favorite to win the district. I would not be shocked to see another rematch between Carthage and Willard, should Carthage get past Neosho...so Carthage could be facing two talented and motivated teams seeking revenge. Sedalia is undefeated though I don't know much about them or any common opponents. Tough district!

Republic was a common. Republic lost to Smith Cotton 42-14
Carthage- beat Republic 34-7
Neosho- beat Republic 36-15
Willard-Got beat by Republic -49-35
This District will be a Dog Fight!

With Belton not having any common opponents, how do you think they compare to these teams that at least have one common opponent.

Personally I think anyone but Ruskin has a legitimate chance at winning this district.

I agree, it's wide open with a bunch of solid teams and not any clear favorites. Don't know much about Belton but have heard they are pretty good so they could certainly. Their schedule shows a couple blowout losses, but one was to Kearney, so you could count that as similar to Carthage shutout by WC as well as Neosho, and Willard's inevitable losses to WC.

It will be fun to see what happens.

Not 100% certain but Willard could be without their senior QB. They played without him the entire second half last week due to a leg injury before halftime. Their strength is running the ball but have moved the ball through the air pretty well this year as well. It's hard to compare Willard and Belton as they play completely different competition. The COC Large is one of the best (and maybe best) conferences in the state. Don't know much about Belton's conference and quality of wins/losses.

Neosho 42
Ruskin 0

Belton 48
Willard 28

Neosho - Ruskin game was as expected..

Belton was up 48-0 at halftime vs willard, and played backups the whole 2nd half..

Thoughts on next week?

(4) Belton @ (1) Sedalia-SC

(3) Neosho @ (2) Carthage

I wonder if the bi-week was a bad thing for Carthage in the long run? I know it guarantees you to advance and be healthy, but with Darreyberry just getting back I wonder if some meaningful snaps in a meaningless game would have been a positive thing?

I already thought Belton could be a sleeper, so after handling Willard I'll solidly pick them. Other than maybe the week 1 win over Republic, S-C's schedule doesn't look particularly rigorous with signature wins or blowouts of lesser teams. But I admittedly don't know much about the teams up there.

I'll pick Carthage at home and with Derryberry, but Neosho will show up motivated and give Carthage a battle. If Carthage has 6 turnovers or whatever they had against Willard, they won't escape this time. Might be one of those close games where one mistake can make the difference. Like the fumbled punt return at Joplin last night.

I could miss on both and wouldn't be at all surprised! I am still sticking with the winner of Carthage/Neosho to win the district.

Carthage was pretty physical up front, LB were decent and tackled okay as a team. Been 9 weeks since I seen them so they may have improved in those areas.

Belton is big and athletic. Very good skills guys on the offensive side of the ball. Team overall probably not as good as the score indicates. Willard was decimated with injuries and couldn't put up much of a fight.

I think Carthage needs Derryberry healthy and playing on both sides of the ball for them to get anywhere. In the game vs Webb City I don't know how many tackles Derryberry was in on but at least 2-3 times he prevented a 8-10 yd run from being a touchdown. That's not to say there aren't some other good players on the team but he could be the difference between Carthage not even getting past the next game and possibly even making it to the Dome.

And then there were two...

Final scores:

Belton 54
Smith Cotton 28

Carthage 33
Neosho 14

Belton was up 54-14 late in 3rd before putting in their backups

(4) Belton @ (2) Carthage

My brain says Carthage, but my gut says Belton... I'm not sure..
Carthage's field will not be wet then and should in descent shape, it didn't get torn up too much last night so I will pick the home team to take the district title! Carthage's ground train moved the ball well against a big Neosho team. After half carthage came out and shut neosho down.

The only common opponent, Willard was destroyed by Belton. Though from the sounds of it, the Willard game may have been Carthage's worst performance of the season with what 5 or 6 turnovers? Turning the ball over than many times and still being able to win by any margin either shows a solid defense and ability to over come adversity, or the opponent is just heavily outmatched.

I would have said Carthage all season, though Belton really seems to have come on strong as of late. Not really surprised that Belton handled Sedalia since my gut feeling was that in spite of their top seeding, all of the teams in the district aside from Ruskin could/would beat them. Belton has been putting up a ton of points. They've put up 40+ in 7 of their last 8 games and 50+ in 3.

Carthage had a better showing against Neosho than the first meeting, and were much improved from what sounded like a very shaky performance against Willard - I think Derryberry is getting back into the groove just in time. I'll still pick Carthage, but wouldn't be surprised if Belton comes in on fire. About the only thing I've been surprised about in this district is that none of the games have been particularly close.

If the Derryberry kid is back healthy and they can mix in more of a pass attack along with the run game they already have, behind a very good offensive line they should be hard to beat.. There defense shut down a good Neosho team in the second half friday night, the Tigers seem to be hitting on all cylinders, but anything is possible in this game.. Should be a good match up..

I was at both the Willard/Carthage game and the Willard/Belton game and will tell you that Belton definitely appeared to be much better than Carthage. Very big...very athletic...very underrated. I do not see Carthage beating them.
