Another district that looks somewhat murky:

(8) East at (1) Smithville - This one would be over by end of first quarter.
(5) Kearney at (4) Excelsior Springs - These two haven't played for some time.
(7) Winnetonka at (2) Lincoln Prep - Give me Tonka in this one although Prep is the IL's best team in years.
(6) Lafayette at (3) Platte County - Air raid. Never close.

Week 6 I will definitely head back over to Platte County who hosts Smithville. If the Warriors survive this one they should win out. The Pirates follow this one up with a visit to C6 heavyweight Ray-Pec.

Lincoln Prep should finish no worse than 7-2 and easily could win out further muddying this district. As for that potential KTown visit to Excelsior (one of my favorite stadiums in NWMO) I would favor the Dogs at this point but....................this is just something interesting I thought I'd throw out there for discussion.

Excelsior is rated as just slightly higher than Grandview. And that game went to overtime for the Dawgs. At Excelsior would be a Super Bowl level event for Excelsior. They would love to have a crack at beating Kearney at home.

Not sure what to take from a Saturday morning game resumption. Kearney seemed very out of sync much more so than Grandview. My suspicion is if they played again the KDogs would win going away...........but that is pure speculation. It has been eons since Excelsior has beaten KTown agree it would be the biggest HSFB event over there in many a year.

The Dawgs backs were torched. If Grandviews#7 doesn't drop passes that made his hands four times, Kearney would have lost by three TDs. Grandview's D line was dominating Kearney's O line.

Smithville has had an easier schedule than Excelsior Springs - per the models used by Maxpreps. I wouldn't get the farm on them.

I have a hard time saying a team "should" have won or lost but man, Grandview blew that game. I know it's difficult having to resume a game on the next day and all but both teams had to do it, AND Grandview had to travel. Still scratching my head over some of Kearney's play calls. Kearney is better than Excelsior, IMO, I think they handle them.

Excelsior Coach before playing Kearney...

Great moments are born from great opportunity. And that's what you have here tonight, boys. That's what you've earned here tonight. One game. If we played 'em ten times, they might win eight. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight, we stay with them. And we shut them down because we can! Tonight, WE are the greatest football team in Clay County. You were born to be football players. Every one of you. And you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It's over. I'm sick and tired of hearing about what a great football team Kearney has. Screw 'em. We've played football for 62 years longer than those Purple people have. We have seven undefeated seasons. They have zero. This is your time. Now go out there and TAKE it.

Kearney is one of those teams that seems to still be searching for their offensive identity. It definitely starts up front. You can see the potential (that justhafax alluded to at the beginning of the season) for this offense to be pretty dynamic they just flat are not consistent..............again goes back to lack of identity. If they are going to even get out of the first round of District play that has to change and fast.

Just an ole fan's opinion but I think the up the gut running is where I would start given the caliber of RB they have.

As for Excelsior they looked anything but impressive at Harrisonville last Thursday night. Very basic looking rushing offense (although their O Line size may match up well with KTown's D Line) with little or no downfield passing threat so I would say yes Kearney would win that one............but still got four weeks and many top matchups to set any of this in stone.

Goes back to the mystery why Grandview looked fresh and excited and Kearney flat and out of focus. Absolutely hate to harp on this stuff but man it has to change for them to get back in the playoff picture............

I would only put K as 6 point favs over Excelsior.

Grandview just had better athletes on the other side in a lot of spots. They have won 7 of the last 9 state championships in track.

They've been just okay in basketball, too................;)

You just answered your question as to why Grandview could hang with Kearney, and Excelsior/Kearney wouldn't really be close. That Grandview team vs this Kearney team was simply a tough match-up for Kearney (and it would be 10/10 times.) Grandview had the talent to play tight, single coverage on Kearney's receivers, and blanket them for virtually the entire game, which allowed them to send 6-7 guys. Laughlin broke a couple runs in the 1st half, but for the most part, he met contact in the backfield. After the 1st K td, their only offense was to throw the ball up and let Stevens go make a play. Grandview had a big OL, and speed on the offense - Kearney's defense was pretty solid (with a couple drops, but the story of the game was really Grandview's D limiting the Kearney O.

I'd expect a Kearney/Excelsior matchup to be a at least a 4 score game.

Kearney has now played both...............how on Earth, then, did Winnetonka come back and beat Grandview?

I didn't see Tonka/Grandview, I'd tend to this it was just different matchups/schemes, certainly Tonka's D had no answer for Laughlin (and Stevens didn't play in that game.).

If you're looking at common opponents, Harrisonville just beat Excelsior... There are a lot of games left, but that would be a great 4/5 matchup for K-town.

I completely agree given I watched that one almost in full last Thursday night. Just threw this out for conversation...............will be in Platte City for their HUGE one hosting Smithville this Friday. As previously noted Lincoln Prep is the wild card here. They could be a 2-3 seed!

Won't that Class 2/3 schedule eventually pull Lincoln down in the district seeding? They're going to get turboed by the likes of Platte, Smithville or Kearney.

Possibly but overall record seems to carry at least some weight. Van Horn is the #2 seed in District 7 as of today.............and would get turboed by Grandview and probably Harrisonville.

The question that should be answered to a great degree this Friday is how good of a 1/5 matchup be rematching Smithville in the (gulp) district semifinals.

Kearney has the lowest rated team on Maxpreps in the past 17 years. They have half the ratings score of the 2004, 2005 and 2006 teams. Historically bad. I'm not sure they survive Excelsior.

No way anyone can know but you predicted last year was an anomaly and they'd win double digits..............you said get back with you after Week 5. I think, as I have since July, this Friday's game at PC will go a long way toward determining which team goes all the way to the C4 title game. NWMO couldn't have drawn better than districts 1-2 in the semis.

They, given there are four weeks to go, likely won't see Excelsior but it would sure be interesting were it to happen..............

I'm still cautious on Smithville, although they look to be the front runner. I don't know how they match up vs. PC. PC looks to be beatable IF you can stop their passing game, or slow it down.

Three big matchups I will watch in person:

1) Smithville RB Miller vs. the Platte County front seven.
2) Smithville front seven's ability to harass/disrupt the QB.
3) Can anyone cover Platte County WR Mitchell?

This much I know I AM NOT LEAVING AT HALFTIME unless the spread is 35 plus. Week 1 this year showed I still have not learned that lesson.........
