Wow this even pre dates when my family moved to Kearney (bicentennial year). Playing in the KCI biggest rival was Lathrop. Feed store at 33-92 four way stop light two lane highway intersection. Farmers on old tractors waving as you passed them. City limits at the 33 bend. Now look.................uber-suburbia.

Archie, Appleton City, and Osceola? Not have football yet at that time?

interesting to note that all the playoff qualifiers in 1973 are now 8 man.

and 1974

And more years than that.

Way to go MSHSAA.

Farm boys have been a bulk of Class 1 football players, and a lot of the farmsteads from back in those days have been bought out, merged, and cleaned off by larger, almost-corporate-like operations. There are a lot less of those boys anymore living in the rural areas. Artist Lowell Davis down at Carthage once told me that the biggest enemy to the family farm was the neighbor. This definitely did start with an ambitious adjoining landowners wanting to enlarge. I like to blame MSHSAA for a lot, but I can't blame them for this.

They could have been proactive and quit coddling class 6.

Wow! Jasper at 221? I thought the high school was big when they won the 1979 state title. Guess it was much larger in 1968. Amazing to see how schools like Ozark. Branson, Kearney, and Smithville have grown. Different times then!

I do not have 79 enrollment numbers, but in 1980 Jasper was at 197.

Jasper had a huge senior class along with some great junior athletes that helped win that '79 title. The descent did occur rather abruptly, as when the freshmen in the 79 season were seniors, the team went winless, including a loss to Golden City. They never really recovered from that early 80s drop, although they would have an over-500 year on occasion. As for Jasper in the late 60s and into the 70s, there were some fantastic teams. Gary Watts coached some of the late 60s groups and Bob Shore had them for a bit in the early 70s. But a big part of a lot of Class 1 population drops are the fact that family farms, or just farms, went from profitability at hundreds of acres to needing thousands of acres. Some of the futures for these smaller schools may well be consolidation unfortunately.

Way back when I was a kid the KC metro limit pretty much was 152 highway and even that did not nearly resemble what it has become (more congested than Shawnee Mission Parkway). Today the metro limit is 92 highway. Platte County has also grown by leaps and bounds. Cass county south of Belton was pretty much all farm land now look! Blue Springs was the east limit and GV was a little ole farm town now look at that! Absolutely amazing.

To be fair, south of Belton still pretty much is farmland...

Right on 49 yep. Travel over to Raymore-Peculiar it goes all suburban fast plus I remember virtually no lights at night between HVille and Belton back in the day. On a related Cass Co note is Ray-Pec planning to add a new HS any time soon?

Lees' Summit: Now LSW, LSN, and LS
Blue Springs: Now BS and BSS
Liberty: Now Liberty and Liberty North
Park Hill: PH and PHS
By 2033, there will be a Kearney North and a Liberty South, a Lee's Summit NW, a Blue Springs South, a Park Hill West. By 2043, Smithville North will open. West Platte will be Class 5 or 6.

We don't need to litigate the developments of S. Madison/School Road in Raymore other than to say there are more houses than there were in 1968 but also plenty of farmland still.
New High School (Likely RayPec East High) is a ways out. Currently building a freshman center out by the middle school plus just did a multimillion dollar renovation to their football field out there.

One would almost think it'd be easier to sell the farm in Cass County. With the sale, either buy a new spread elsewhere out of the urban range, or just live comfortably in one of the new houses built with the sprawl.
