I got Dora, Slater, St. Elizabeth, and Winston. I confess I know little to nothing about NW MO.
The three top teams are Winston, Mound City, and Jefferson
Jefferson is a historically very successful program with a hall of fame coach. They execute their gameplans well, they are disciplined, and they shoot it well. They don't make many mistakes. Their one loss to this point is to Mound City by two at Mound City's tournament championship game (but at the time Mound City had maybe 4 practices in)
Mound City has a great combination of youth and seniors. They have a 6-5 post who is very strong and two guards (one is 6'3, one 6'1 who both average about 20 a contest, and they are shot creators...and score many ways. Both are very legitimate college guard prospects). The older group as a whole is very strong and athletic, while the younger group is more skilled basketball-wise. They have two really dynamic scorers that are just freshman and sophomores. They are the most physically talented team in the area, but are still working toward where they want to be. They won state in 8 man football, which has charged them up with some energy.
Winston- another really solid program with a history. They are coached well, always prepared for opponents and have an all-state guard (Jacob Lewis) that is extremely tough to hold down. They have the right people taking the shots, but are the most blue collar team of the three. They will also have a test in districts with Wellington Napoleon, who is very similar in makeup.
Second Tier (in my opinion) in the region would be:
Wellington Napoleon...Shannon boy is very very good (all state caliber as well) and they have some other pieces, but hard to compare apples to apples as they don't have any common opponents. They are playing a lot of bigger schools, which has kept their record pretty average to this point.
Pattonsburg, who has lost by over 30 to Jefferson early in the year, and then lost by about 15 to Winston recently. They are coming off a long football season too and are going through some growing pains, but they are tough...especially at home. They have size and athleticism and are more basketball savvy than some previous other groups. They are a split favorite to win their district with Mercer, just based on their volatility and inexperience in playing the big game.
Mercer: Historically solid program that is well coached. The kids play very hard, but might be down still from a couple of years ago talent-wise. Winston and Mercer are conference foes with Winston getting the better of Mercer for quite a while now. They could beat Pattonsburg in a big game just based on experience.
North Andrew: In Mound City's district, so that's a strike against them. They lost 7 top kids last year, but have a really solid group that came in behind them. They are well coached and have some really talented players. Like many class 1 teams, depth is always a factor though, and lack of experience in the big games has held them back so far, but they played Jefferson to under 10 points at Jefferson. They have sleeper potential to out someone, but are not the favorite. Will play Pattonsburg tomorrow night for the GRC west title if everything goes as planned. Game is at NA.
I've yet to see another team ready to contend for the region's top spot.
so there you have it
