Class 1 as the Catch-all is way more competitive, a better system.

Just going off the numbers it appears very obvious that from a competitive standpoint, making Class 1 the catch-all (and not allowing private schools to play in the smallest classification) is best for everyone involved.

History shows us that if you play ball in Class 4 or lower and are in the bottom half of enrollment(unless you're a private school in Class 1), you have virtually no shot of winning a championship

Part (but certainly not all) of the reason for that is the enrollment differential. If you read right under the Class breaks I have included the enrollment differential with Class 1 as the catch-all and then under the current Class 5 catch-all.

Classes 1-4 see the biggest benefit, but you can look at the breakdown for yourself.

Another potential benefit, with Class 1 being considerably more competitive, some of the schools that have gone 8-man may decide to give Class 1 a go, and start refilling the lowest Classification.

I also heard a while back that Kelly was dropping football

They just got it 2 years ago. Seems a bit premature if they are. Either way doesn't really change much.

What do you think of the proposal instead of nitpicking what teams may or may not be dropping?

I usually look at these threads and wonder what is the point of tinkering with the classification scheme but that actually looks pretty legit!

I'm not trying to nit pick, but if schools drop then there will be movement. no matter what the class is people will crab, it looks good, but I don't think it is going to matter

It's a difference of 2 schools. Would literally just move Windsor up to Class 2 and leave Class 1 with 44 teams instead of 46.

All it takes is the right person to see it and realize that it is better from a competition standpoint. People have griped for years about championship blowouts, you would (should) eliminate a lot of that.

I'm looking for potential issues beyond teams dropping football. That happens and creates some movement, but who cares? Doesn't change the big picture.

If the point of this exercise is competitive balance (or as close to it as you can get without completely watering things down) and you're leaving Class 1 with 44-46 schools in it, you have to remove private schools from the lowest Classification.

For several reasons.

1. It only affects 2 private schools (Valle and St. Vincent) who draw kids from large towns with Class 4 Enrollment (If you combine the enrollment of Ste Gen + Valle and Perryville + St. Vincent they both equal Class 4 population. It isn't equitable for Class 1 schools drawing Class 4 talent to be playing Drexel, Sweet Springs, Slater, etc. who are "actual" small schools and only play with the kids that live in the district.

2. The multiplier exists for a reason, there is no good reason for a private school to play in the lowest class.

3. Both schools regularly have 35-50 kids on their sidelines, they aren't hurting for numbers.

4. Unpopular opinion, private schools play by different rules than public.

I didn't/don't want to get into a public/private debate. I think it is a reasonable accommodation, if you disagree, simply flip it so Valle and St. Vincent are in Class 1, move Windsor and Putnam County in Class 2.

But by doing that you're basically giving Valle a championship every single year and defeating the purpose of making every Class competitive. JMO.

I'm pretty sure Ste. Gen. would remain class 3 if you added Valle's enrollment to ours....Pretty sure.

Under the current system that is....

I do like your proposal in that it creates less difference between the highest and lowest schools in each class. I doubt if it would be feasible to automatically bump up the two private schools in class 1. I imagine those schools that are at the top of the class would be enthusiastic about the proposal. Those schools who find themselves at the bottom of a class - not so much!

put 48 in class 6 and 5 and I am sold. I've never understood why class 6 has 32? Take it to 48 is only the difference between 1770 and 1620.

Interesting proposal. FYI. I don't think Bayless has a football team and they are listed.

Under the current system that is....

Ste Gen enrollment 638
Valle actual enrollment 125

Combined enrollment 763.

Smallest current Class 4 Enrollment is 732, so yes, combined Ste Gen and Valle are a Class 4 talent pool.

Not really the overarching point, but the reasoning for Valle being in Class 2.

I really like this. Especially class 5, but I'm probably biased because a lot of those big games, Webb-Carthage, Carthage/Webb vs Springfield area schools are in my viewing area. Plus the chance to see schools like Staley and Fort Osage potentially match up with Webb or Carthage in the playoffs.

Me too, if it were up to me I would have the schools actually affected (Class 1) vote on it and if the majority decide they are ok with private schools in Class 1, then they can stay.

Looks like a reasonable proposition! Has anyone suggested this to MSHSAA or emailed them the above "rough draft"?

Could definitely work. Have eight 6-team districts and reduces the enrollment differential even more (for Class 5)

Class 6, District 1

Seckman

Class 5, District 1

Poplar Bluff
Rockwood Summit
Farmington
Hillsboro

Class 4, District 1

Eight 8-team districts

Cape Central
DeSoto
Sikeston
North County
Perryville
Potosi
Ste Genevieve
Dexter

Class 3, District 1

Eight 8-team districts

Park Hills Central
Kennett
Fredericktown

Class 2, District 1

Eight 8-team districts

St. Vincent
Valle Catholic

Class 1, District 1

Six 6-team districts, Two 5-team districts

If there would be a vote on it you'd have to include class 2 schools as it would effect them too. I guess my thought on it is if you bump up private schools in class 1 (because of Valle) you'd have to bump up all private schools a class - and that ain't going to happen...

I believe what is going to be on ballot this spring is keep 32 in class 6 and then divide the remaining 5 classes in equal numbers.

Why?

Just amend it in such a way that private schools can't play in the smallest class.

It doesn't have to affect any other private school, the multiplier already affects them.

That's why it would be a no go. Not saying I disagree with your thought on it, but that would be a fair argument for them. What's the multiplier for if when it doesn't affect a school enough, you add on too it.

Kenny when i say valle pulls from a class 4 talent pool don't you think I did the math first?

No, let's keep it the same and have Class 4 Kirksville (756) play Class 4 Parkway North (1236), because THAT makes sense. A differential of 480. A proportional differential of 63%. So apply that to Kearney...they should be playing Blue Springs South, Lee's Summit West.

It's really as simple as stating "No private school can play in the smallest classification". Multiplier doesn't change.

That doesn't affect any other school. Just 2 who are currently in Class 1.

And maybe they wouldn't if they knew that they weren't at such a steep competitive disadvantage. Like I said, several larger 8-man teams may consider giving 11 man a go under this setup. Any thoughts on the proposal?

You obviously put a lot of thought into this.
I like it as well, good job. :)

JMO.
