Coach Mitch Haskins won Charleston's first state championship back in 1975.

Coach Lennies McFerren won seven state championships between 1980 and 1992. Yes indeed Lennies McFerren stood tall in 80, 83, 86, 87, 89, 90 and 92. Lennies is now coaching @ Kennett high school but the air in the halls @ kennett does not spell " Tradition " like the halls @ Charleston.

Coach Bob Spencer won a state championship in 1996.

Coach Dan Farmer has won two state championships in 2007 and 2012.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enrollment in the top five schools in the SEMO Conference.
1. Jackson---------------1523 students---One state championship back in 1934
2. Poplar Bluff----------1478 students----Two state championships back in 2004 and 05
3. Cape Central--------1100 students----Two state championships back in 1954 and 1980.
4. Sikeston---------- ----957 students-----One state championship back 2011
5. Cape Notre Dame--529 students---715 students--three state championships in 1986, 87 and 2008.

All the above high schools have won nine state championships while Charleston has won 11 championships.

Charleston---------------273 students--How can a school like Charleston ( Enrollment 273 students ) compete with the class 4 and 5 schools listed above almost every year? I've heard some say, " It's the water they drink " or the " Tradition @ Charleston high school. "

If it's not the tradition or the water @ Charleston, could some one explain what's going on in Charleston, Missouri.

That why their nickname is SEMO is " The Factory " they just keep producing good players and teams.

The one thing that helps Charleston is the " SEMO Conference Schedule . " They play class 4 and 5 schools during the season then drop down to compete with class 3 schools in their district. NMCC ( 457 Students ) also has an advantage by playing a big schedule. Train, the big schedule Charleston plays has paid big dividend resulting in 11 state championships.

Yes indeed, Coaches Mitch Haskins, Lennies McFerren, Bob Spencer and Danny Farmer have all won state championships @ Charleston and I believe these championships were made possible by having the opportunity to play a big schedule, having great players and having knowledgeable coaches.

Train and others, How can a school with 273 students compete with the much larger schools like Jackson, Poplar Bluff, Cape Central and Sikeston?

metro....Scott County Central (18 state titles) doesn't play a "big" schedule....AT ALL. They are just good. Period. Just like Charleston....they are just good.

Its been years since I have seen Charleston play, but man they played as hard as any team I have ever seen on defense.

When Charleston won in 75...and then when they won most of those in the 80's...they were one of the larger schools in the area.

When Cape won in 80...they lost in the regular season to SCC.

If you good...you good. Not sure who you play has that much to do with it.

Under McFerren....Charleston's toughest games were every day in practice...that is how they got better..that and the fact they had good players who became players down at the park.

Rocket, Thanks for weighting in on subject. You and I know how Scott County Central reloads each year. SCC should keep a low profile and hope nobody ask questions. SCC has 107 students in high school. I'm guessing they play many schools in classes 2, 3, 4 and 5.

The higher classes are the hardest to win a state championship. In classes 4 and 5, an average move in would not be as big a deal as a class 1 school. In some cases an average " Move In " might not be a rotation player in the better class 4 and 5 schools.

Big games @ SLUH today

St. Mary's -CBC---4:30 PM

SLUH -Hazelwood Central @ 6:00 PM today--( Hazelwood Cenral defeated McCluer @ McCluer by 7 points a few days ago.

Coach McFerren vs Coach Cookson. Charleston vs Scott County. Man those use to be some great games to watch.

Easiest answer is they have the talent to compete. Enrollment of the school is a footnote when they have big time talent and in many cases better talent than some larger schools. Same with SCC through the 80s, 90s, and a few years ago with Otto, enrollment has nothing to do with how good you are when you have 6-9 all Americans and college type players playing alongside him.
