Let's see... go to Africa, pay $50,000, tie a dead leopard to the hood of a truck to entice a lion, shoot lion with a crossbow, track the lion for 40 hrs., shoot lion with a gun, behead the lion and leave the carcass. What a sport!!!! I wonder how Dr. Walter Palmer likes being the hunted now!!!

Not something I would ever do but thousands of people do it every year around the world. If it wasnt for the fees that hunters pay there would be almost no programs in place to help thretened species. Dont think the dr did anything against the law

I dont think this is any worse than going to Texas, picking the elk you want to shoot out of a catalog then going out where you know he is and blasting him.

Palmer was convicted a few years ago of shooting a black bear in Wisconsin outside of the prescribed legal hunting area and then lying to authorities on where he shot it. Given one year probation. Real ethical guy. Glad his dental practice in Minnesota has shut down in last couple of days.

I'm not anti hunting. I don't hunt but have no problem with deer hunters and see the need to control deer populations. I even like venison. But this case is more about an egomaniac who gets his rocks off hanging exotic animals on his wall to show off how rich he is. He even made plans before he left Africa to schedule an elephant hunt. And yes, he was sort of set up by his guides who told him what he was doing was legal.

Still, this guy has more money than he knows what to do with and going on safari hunts to impress people. No wonder so many peope worldwide hate Americans.

While I have zero interest in going lion hunting or even deer hunting for that matter, fine the guy and move on. Why the huge outcry over an animal that would eat you in a heartbeat? What he did was illegal, not because he was trophy hunting, but because it was a protected animal. Who really knows if the dentist knew what he was doing? He hired guides. They should pay the fines unless it can be shown he knew what he was doing. What was done was wrong but hardly worthy the attention given the incident.

I'm sure that lion hunting guides in Zimbabwe go thru a thorough certification process and have liability insurance. Probably a union job unless Zimbabwe is a right to work State. Poor Dr. Palmer was duped and Cecil the lion had it coming to him.

They knew the lion was in a protected area and lured him away from it for the first shot then tracked him for the kill. The dentist had been on MANY big games hunts. I'm bettin he knew what they were doing and knew it was illegal.

Could be. I'm confident the guides knew but why pay 50K for guides if you don't plan on following the rules? Either way, it's a dead animal.

So you're ok with people killing eagles?

I never said I was OK with the lion! Either way, lions or eagles, they are animals! People get all bent out of shape over this but not 30 million babies being killled.

Confess my unpopular opinion: I really don't care what people kill unless it causes an issue with the ecosystem or unless it is done in a cruel manner. We kill zillions of animals for food, leather, whatever. If you want a lion head on the wall, I don't care as long as we don't kill too many of them.

I'm pretty sure killing too many of them IS the issue with Lions and eagles and several others. Which guy do you tell HE can't kill a Lion when the other just did? The real legal issue is they lured THIS Lion off of a game preserve to kill him.
