Carthago Delenda Est

If Webb takes care of the ball ...they win a low scoring game . If they are minus 2 or more in turnovers ....I can't fathom them winning . I'm interested to see how well Carthage can run the ball . Joplin had some success running but most of their yards were on one play . The other games teams were close to negative yds rushing

Carthage has what it takes but I’m with you. If WC avoids turnovers they probably win. Seems like in the past couple years Carthage had more success running against Webb City than most - but then they mix in some big pass plays against the WC defense and suddenly they are punting or intercepted and down a score or two. You get in a hole to Webb City and you don’t get out. You have to get Webb down early then burn down the forest so there is nothing they can fabricate a ladder with. As Joplin learned - you can be up 4 scores late over most teams and be safe - but Webb City isn’t most teams.

Last year Webb City beat Carthage on just a couple big plays - but otherwise I think Carthage lead time of possession and total yards. That was with starting QB Sappington and another key player (I think it was Mueller) out due to injury - I believe it was just announced the day of the game much to the disappointment of Carthage fans who had legitimate hopes for a second WC defeat in 3 years.

Friday I think we’ll see a moderate scoring game - something like 21-28. The victor will come down to who makes a mistake and who doesn’t. Carthage has run the ball well this year but I'll be interested to see how that works out against Webb's D. The one thing that always impresses me the most about Webb City is defense. They just always seem to have kids in the right place at the right time.

Attendance wise it will probably be the largest game yet played at Haffner Stadium! Webb City has never played there - the last 2 years in a row have been at Webb. I wonder how many Webb fans will go to the old stadium?

I went over to watch CJ vs Carthage,,,,,couldn’t believe with that new facility Carthage didn’t put a concession stand or even restrooms on the visitors side

I also felt like Carthage controlled the game last year. Webb had the big pick 6 and two long passes to Kabala . Neither team moved the ball overly well last year . I expect much of the same this year . One thing to watch is , Carthage plays a few lineman both ways so if they fall behind in first half , it may be difficult to come back. Watching the Carthage vs Joplin game it looked like Carthage was totally gassed in the second half , then again it was about 90 degrees that night .

Last time Webb went to Carthage , they turned it over 5-6 times and got boat raced . Hoping for a different result this time around.

I give the advantage to the Carthage offense. WC offense has been mistake prone every game. The defenses are about even. Maybe a very slight advantage to WC. The advantage for special teams goes to WC. You can almost count on Coach Rod getting a big play there. Maybe that will be enough? I don’t think so. WC minus 2 in the turnover column. Carthage will capitalize on WC mistakes and Tigers win by 7. 35 to 28.

I’m not surprised. Since they built the place nice without the cheap DIY concessions and porta potties it would have added quite a bit of redundant cost to the project. The concession/restroom complex is located close to the end zone so it’s not a terrible walk from the visitor side. Plus, I rarely see more than 100 or so fans over there aside from WC or Joplin once every 2 years.

Carthage D gave up 56 to Joplin????

I don't think that Carthage's D can stop Webb! After the Joplin game with the #3 qb who did a pretty good job in spite, haven't seen the fumbles with the #1 offense in the game, so I believe that JRod will have them protecting the ball pretty good. Carlton will have a little harder time looking for that hole to run through like he did last year and like he did against Joplin. Last year the linebackers from Webb were Juniors, now being Seniors I see them staying home a lot more and plugging the holes that need to be closed so that running up the gut on them this year will be much harder. If Carlton, who has a strong arm that's for sure has to start throwing, it's a different look by Webb's D-backs this year too. They are covering much better. That doesn't mean that there hasn't been a couple of long passes against them, but the balls thrown were pretty good and some good catches by receivers, but the defender was right there with them, in the right place. It's going to be a great game and atmosphere at Carthage this Friday night - Webb by 20!

Like he did against Joplin?? He'd probably take those running lanes again tomorrow night.

will this game be live streamed ?
Both teams have streaming but I’d recommend Webb City’s. Carthage’s radio is decent but the video stream tends to be poor quality and unreliable. Sometimes it won’t load. Sometimes the audio is garbled or out of sync with the video. Sometimes the camera is pointed at the wrong end of the field, lol. They try, but KDMO doesn't have the crew or equipment to do it right. I always watch other teams stream when possible.

I like the comment that sometimes it seems like Webb City has 12 or 13 players on defense. Funny that is the storyline is Carthage’s run game - I’m so used to hearing about Webb City’s run game for the last 25 years.

Webb City fans are famous for showing up hours early esp when seating is at a premium which it will be on the visitor side. On the other hand about 80% of the Carthage fans will be walking through the gate between 6:55 and 7:15. Will Webb’s overflow fans see a half empty home stadium and take it over before the home crowd arrives? Even though the parking lot is pretty big I bet it will be full early and there aren’t many great alternatives.

If there isn’t anyplace to sit on the visitors side, and they take your money for a ticket their isn’t anything wrong with going to the home side

Walnut Heights likes to really limit the number of tickets they give us whenever we play at their place. One of the biggest games in Ampipe history, I was standing along side a fence!

Eating your eighth hot dog............

Yea the Carthinagins don’t tolerate people standing around the field or on the track. They get on the bullhorn and tell you to move away from the arena or the Gestapo will come and get you and take you off to the dungeons.

Like JRod said on the podcast, it’s just not a very friendly place

Don’t you mean Cartilage?

No dog in the fight but I really enjoyed the game tonight. A litttle warm early but the sun set was beautiful and then it was nearly perfect. Having only seen these two teams play once before in their games against Joplin, I thought Carthage might have the upper hand. Bueno was correct for calling me out on WC defense. They played nearly as well as could be expected against Carlton. Kid is some kind of football player and it was a good defensive effort. WC special teams, outside the PAT issues, were way better than CTown tonight with the obvious block at half that set the momentum rolling. Both teams hurt themselves with penalties. 2 turnovers for Carthage and none for WC was big, as I don’t think Webb had less than two all year? The other thing that has barely been mentioned is the receiver performance. Total opposite between blue and white uniforms. Not sure how many easy drops the home team had but the visitors caught nearly everything. Close game thru 3 quarters but the Cardinals wore down the 2 way players for the Tigers late. Congrats to both teams. I think they’ll be tough outs come playoff time and I hope they go far.

I don’t understand with the success Carthage has had for the last 10-15 years why they don’t have more kids out.

All things considered I think they have a decent turnout. The thing about Carthage is that in spite of being a consistently good program for quite some time now, they have very little to show for it. Consistently winning 8 or 9 regular season games and making a few post-season runs would be considered outstanding to most but when your next door neighbor has to rent a storage facility for all their trophies and is the focus of nearly all the local praise, fanfare and media circus it’s sometimes difficult to sell your own success.

Carthage’s accomplishments while great, aren’t the types of things that make families hop district boundaries, inspire all the boys in the district to dream of playing varsity football someday and other things that drive up participation to remarkable numbers.
