I listened to bits and pieces of this game...sounded like a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes by Carthage and maybe Battle as well, but Battle was able to overcome them. Battle's quick score going into half had to be demoralizing for Carthage, having just climbed nearly out of a 16 point hole only to fall halfway back in by giving up a quick 3 play touchdown. Carthage was well positioned to tie it up after half but just couldn't seem to overcome mistakes and keep the ball moving forward. Battle did a good job of making it feel like Carthage was further behind than they actually were.
For Battle, going for 2 every time is a bold and interesting strategy. Don't know much about them but they seem like a top tier program. It's impressive to put together a new group of kids with a new coach and immeditely be a class 5 power. Maybe that is typical with new "expansion" type schools or maybe there is more to the story of what CPS assembled at Battle that I don't know.
All in all, Carthage should be proud. They were more or less overlooked this season but ended up winning the COC Large and making a great run to the state quarterfinals and holding their own against a very impressive team.
