This coach has been in a Missouri final four every year he's been a head coach except 2009,2010 and 2011 ( Won districts in 2009, 2010 and 2011 but lost in the sectionals ) The magic started in 2012. and could run for years. This coach is only 31 years old.

1. 2012--------4th
2. 2013--------State Champs
3. 2014--------4th
4. 2015--------4th
5. 2016---------State Champs
6. 2017---------?--Favored to win another state championship this year.

So he has NOT been in the Final 4 in 3 years out of 11 so far and your headline is "This Missouri coach has been in a Missouri Final 4 every year he's been a head coach?"
Gee I wonder who this streak of Final 4's came about.

This either has missing or bad info, or is a trick question. Oh the mystery.
I'll be shocked if he's NOT talking about Irons. He seems to have a thang for him and his 'legally recruited' players everywhere he goes.

St. Louis area teams do not recruit athletes however some give academic scholarships.

I have some ocean front property in Butler County to sell you at a real bargain price if you really believe that.

3Rfan, Would you explain to the MoSports posters what you classify as " Recruiting? "

Same as it is for college coaches, but it used to be illegal in Missouri for a public school. I know you're not dumb enough to think the coaches in St. Louis are going out and recruiting the best 'students' they can find and hope they just happen to D-1 caliber basketball players.

The rules are what they are in Missouri. Some know who to work the system. Some get caught "bending" the rules and claim its what was best for the kids. Some never get caught...

Legend. Can you name a team in Missouri that has been caught on violations charges by the MSHSAA in the last three years? The MSHSAA could not find any violations against Scott County Central and they had 4 players in their rotation this year that were move ins. Having 4 players move in over a two year period seems a little odd but no rules were broken.

Is it as odd as Vashon having a mediocre team but when Irons gets there they are immediately a FF team

Metro-dude you are a walking contradiction. You gripe about SCC with four players but Vashon had ELEVEN players move in.

tgrwds34 well said. As I stated the rules are what they are in Missouri and if you can find ways around them without breaking them and that coach can still sleep well at night then that's their right. Who am I to judge or say if Coach Irons is good or not but most good coaches have someone they look up to or model their style and coaching values after and the Irons currently at Vashon seems to me like Coach Iron's 2.0....

We can not complain about any of the following three schools( SCC, Vashon or Sikeston. ) All three schools have legal players according to the MSHSAA. Bucket is assuming all Vashon players are move in players. Bucket should name a few of these move in players @ Vashon because fairness is @ stake.

Maybe Bucket Lover should have worded it better. Bucket Lover you should have said eleven “NEW” players on the roster. Guess the previous coach at Vashon just wasn’t a very good talent evaluator.... Those kids were probably walking the halls of Vashon all along just weren’t playing basketball….

I don't question the fact that Tony Irons can coach. But, when you coach the St. Louis City All-Stars, you have a distinct advantage. I'm more impressed with coaches who can take a group of kids who have went to the same school since grade school and keep them together and mold them into a Final 4 Team. The difference is some coaches spend the summer with their players in the gym developing them and some spend their summers at AAU Games putting together next year's team. Maybe we should call that Facilitating instead of coaching...

tgrwds34, Can you name a few coaches who you are describing in your above post. I have a few friends who are coaching in Southeast Missouri, I'm wondering if they are on your list?

Is Vashon a public or magnet school?

They are a public or "neighborhood" school. Students who attend Vashon are suppose to live within the boundaries. There are 14 high schools in the St. Louis School District and i believe 3 are classified that way. Vashon, Roosevelt, and Sumner. The other 11 schools are "choice" schools or "magnet" schools. It is actually legal for those 11 schools to go into the middle schools and recruit students. They all have enrollment numbers to meet. This recruitment process at SLPS is actually a nessesity. Now, are the athletes recruited harder? Yes. Does Vashon send recruiters in? Make your own assumptions.

Vashon must enroll students in their assigned boundaries first. Others students can make application to enroll @ Vashon if they have room. The catch here is the Principal makes the choice who gets in. I'm guessing the Principal is an honest man and would not favor athletes over students who do not play on their sports team. Vashon coaches could influence the Principal on who are excepted but you be the judge on that one. If you were the Principal @ Vashon, could you be influenced? I'll say this off the record, I'm betting Tony Irons and the football coach are like brothers to the Principal.

I'm guessing the coaches in all high schools across Missouri are the most popularity teachers on staff.

I'm not sure about Vashon sending recruiter to the middle schools to enroll student since the students in Vashon's assigned boundaries get the first choice to enroll @ Vashon but I'm not saying they don't.

Metro you didn't say anything about the Sikeston Vashon game did you go? We gave it all we had just didn't have the firepower to keep up. Good luck to them and all the rest of the teams.

It was you that said not long ago that they can, and do, go to the middle schools and recruit kids'legally.' You always add that they are recruiting students, not athletes. I still have that ocean front property in Butler County if you're a true believer in that. :p

Vashon also has open tryouts in the summer. They call it basketball camps for St. Louis youths, but it is used as a recruiting tool to get these kids to enroll that may be potential basketball stars. I know of coaches in the STL area that took their kids to this "camp" and all it was used for was to evaluate talent, get contact numbers, and names. If this is legal then that is fine. But with such a huge geographic area to draw students from they have advantages over every single Class 4 team in the state.

Train, The Sikeston Bulldogs had a very good game plan of dropping their quarter court defense down to protect the basket and give the Woverines the outside shoot. This was very good strategy and helped Sikeston to take a 24-20 half time advantage. Both Farris and Fred Thatch spent time on the bench the first half. Vashon coach Tony Irons made a decision to counter the Sikeston strategies if Vashon could gain an advantage in the score. The big Vashon advantage came with a 7 point lead and Peanut Farris running the point. The strategies was to delay the game ( With the lead ) until Sikeston came out of their well played defense to contest the guards. When Sikeston was force to come out on the guards, The Vashon guards were able to drive to the basket, pass off to the bigs or shoot free throws and Peanut Farris can shoot free throws. It appeared to me both coaches did all they could to win the game and advance.

I'm guessing a Sikeston-Vashon game will come again next year in a class 4 Sectional game. Both teams have good players returning to do battle next year however Kelvin Lee and St. Mary's has even odds to replace Vashon. I am hearing St. Mary's may have a " Pit Bull " enrolling next year.

Bucket, The coaches @ CBC, St. Mary's, Chaminade, SLUH, Northwest Academy, Miller Career and others already know the players and parents before the 6th grade. Most of those kids will go where there father and mothers attended high school. Vashon does not have an advantage on these kids. CBC runs a bus to the city daily to bring kids to CBC.
Justin Tatum, Kelvin Lee, Frank Bennet, Ewin Claggett, Tony Irons and others. It appears to me Justin Tatum, Kelvin Lee, Frank Bennet and Ewin Claggett have a huge advantage over Tony Irons other then some of those kid's parents who attended Vashon. Peanut Farris and Mario McKinney father's attended Vashon. Jimmy McKinney ( Missouri ) helps Tony Irons coach @ Vashon.

I'm betting Kelvin Lee knows every kid in the City who plays basketball before the 5th grade. I don't think Tony Irons works to recruit kids, Most of the city kids will attend where their father's and mothers attended high school.

I was talking with one of the four outstanding freshmen @ Vashon's parents. I ask did any other high school coach contact your son about attending their high school, They answered no, he has been talking about attending Vashon since he started playing basketball in the second grade.

I guess all those coaches I talked to were lying then. Thanks for clearing it up.

No one has mentioned that Sikeston had a 24-12 lead when Thatch picked up his 2nd foul and took a seat. He came back in and picked up his 3rd pretty soon too. We'll never know how much different that made. The big difference in the game was when Vashon started trapping the Sikeston guards and they didn't handle very well. It led to several Vashon layups and a lead they held they never gave up.

You're right 3Rfan. Those two calls turned the momentum of the game. Sikeston had all the momentum and was rolling and then Thatch got called for a very questionable 3rd foul along the baseline. His second was weak as well. But it happens. The two worst calls was the foul on the 3-point shot when Gilbert stuck his leg out trying to initiate the contact and there still wasn't contact. And also the illegal screen on Jenkins at halfcourt. I couldn't believe those two calls nor Thatch's third foul. What were they looking at? Thatch went to the bench and Vashon went on an 8-0 run to end the half. Sikeston was out-manned and needed some breaks to win the game. Instead Vashon got the breaks.
