Just what is going on in California? California never seems to have a rebuilding year, but to start the season 0-2? That hasn't happened in the last 5 years. Did they graduate most of the starters from last season?[/
I believe they were in a re-building year before that. It just happens that some schools have down years and other schools get better. Most would have to agree that they lost a ton of talent last year.

Graduated quite a bit and lost the main coach. Mostly new staff and the kids have had a hard time buying into it.

That's funny!!! Main Coach!!!! Crap! They just lost a ton of talent and everyone else is better right now! That is ridiculous to say! Coach Albertson has done a great job with the program and I applaud him for staying there in what was going to be this situation. People on here, from California, saying stuff like that will only divide the team even more! There is a reason why you see fewer coaches now days!

Happens to be the truth. Didn't say I liked it, just the truth. Also, the term Head Coach can have different meanings too, but I won't elaborate.

I agree with you Hangman. Most of the criticism is usually unwarranted, but I can't give a pass to the very few exceptions that are (in my fact based opinion). I just don't care much for a person in a position of authority such as a Superintendent intentionally screwing a few years worth of kids working his angle and setting the stage for him to be the shoe-in for the coaching position he wants. We've always had a lot of interest in our Head Coaching position. We in fact had over 30 applicants the last time without one single interview to any of them. Nice of the administration to waist everybody's time when they never had a chance. And no, I've never had anyone play for him, just a close follower of the program for decades. I do wish the kids the best. That's all.

It really does not matter what the superintendent does or says though. It is the 7 people on the board that ultimately makes the decision. True, he or she could manipulate to an extent, but it is those 7 people that decides who coaches. In fact, I know of a coach a while back there that was told he had a coaching job there and all was on board with it. School board decided not to hire that coach and hired a totally different coach. I do not see how he screwed a few years worth of kids though? IMO. If that was the case and he did it for personal reasons to be the coach, I think he would have left. Again, just my opinion. I think he wants what is best for the kids and that is all you can ask for in a coach. It just does not work when things are divided in a town. That seems to be the problem. Again, coaching is hard enough and bashing coaches here is not the answer. I have been around and kept up with that program since the 80's.

I thank you for your perspective. School boards very, very rarely vote majority against a superintendents recommendation. I know I'm old fashion, but I like things to play out for the right reasons.

Not angry at all. Just tired of everyone bashing coaches all the time and causing problems for people trying to do a job. Coaching is hard enough profession without all the extra curricular commotion caused on here.
Sorry, hangman. My question wasn't intended for you. It was intended for PINTOPUNTER, who seems to crave stirring crap about the California coaching position every year. I totally agree with your sentiments, that was my point in asking the question.

Reactions: O line wins games
Shoot90draw, you asked the question. You also new the answer before you asked. I accurately answered it in the first post. They previously won 3-4 games a year, not 2-3. If that's your reasoning for removal then this year or the next should be his last year because that's all they are likely to win. At least the previous coach has actually won a state championship, which doesn't appear to likely happen to the current won. Also, the current superintendent isn't in the press box "helping" the coach. Ya, that wasn't one of the many angles, just a great individual doing whatever it takes to help out. You could actually asked past people in the administration such as a formal principal. They actually had conversations about being the coach. When he realized what was in the works he took his kid and moved to tipton as fast as he could. That's ok, we can all hold hands sitting around the campfire singing Kumbaya my Marty, Kumbaya. Prediction, California 28-21 over Versailles.

I think you missed my point. I was saying that if did "angle" to get the job, how did he screw over several years worth of kids? Because the old coach who "angled" for his job, won games. The past several years California was very competitive and successful. If he had "angled" and then won 2-3 games a year, yes he would have screwed over several years of kids.

The group of kids he screwed over was the three years of the previous coach. Marty knew he wanted to coach his kid. If he wanted to coach then he should've became the coach three years earlier when he recommended to hire coach Johnston. Problem was that he needed three more years working to get his full retirement. If Johnston had much success then it would've been much harder to get rid of him. Yes, there were multiple things hid did that helped gear everything to getting his way. True, he didn't have a 100% gaurntee that it would all work out, but he held the cards and delt them as needed. It never was one huge thing, just a bunch of small things that all pointed into his favor. That or a lifetime of coincidences that happened over a couple of years. Again, you could ask a couple of people formerly in the administration that had these conversations with him, but I guess who cares now? I want our kids to do great, just can't take the praise and worship a few give this man. My original post is accurate. We did graduate quite a bit and Lab was the one who could get every ounce of potential out of the kids and they played their hearts out for him. Lab quit after marty's second year and the school sent the AD to his house for a whole day to talk him into coming back, not to strange for a assistant. The following year the school board fired Lab, which I was fine with. I guess after they slept on it they realized what they did, called a special meeting three days later and hired him back. Who the hell has ever done that for a Head Coach not to mention for someone who's just an assistant??? He's the one who ran the practices and got the most out of the kids. Yes, it took the rest of the staff and dedicated kids to accomplish what they did, but he was the one and everybody knows it. I personally don't care that much for Lab. A lot of extra baggage comes with him, but he got the most out of the kids.
