C5#3Webster Groves 61 - C6#5 Nixa 68 (FINAL)

WG getting up and down the court with post players standing 5’9, 6’3 and 6’2.
they’re doing good on the boards but Nixa is more organized on offense and that’s making the difference so far.
Webster Groves with back to back FTs followed by a 3-P to pull within 7 of Nixa with 1:45 left in 1st half

WG pulls within 5 with 15 sec left in half and Gibbons follows with a buzzer beater 3-P to give Nixa a 31-23 lead headed into half

Nixa leads 63-54 with 2:21 left.
18 point deficit to start the 4th Q and WG cut the deficit to 8.
gibbons at the line with bonus FTs.

gibbons makes her second as well to take the Nixa lead back to 10
64-54

Maupin knocks down a 3-P to pull WG within 5 with a min left
She has 21 on the night.
Nixa at the FT line and makes the second to make it a 6 point game with 45 seconds left

Nixa wins 68-61 over Webster Groves

Class 5 top 5 is going to be pretty competitive come playoffs, depending how everything is set up district-wise.
West Plains, CJ, Notre Dame, Webster Groves, Whitfield

One of the two best WG players didn’t play well. Forced up a lot of shots. Nixa was more aggressive and physical and that’s why they won

I agree on both points. But given how the game was being called by the refs, if WG would have played agressive, their two best would have fouled out the beginning of the second half.

I agree. I knew from the get go that the officiating would be biased for nixa. It didn’t get any better till the game was decided

We can both agree on that.
the biggest thing that I noticed was there were many times were WG would tie up a Nixa player with the ball and get called for a reaching foul, and then when it was the Nixa player causing a tie up, it would be a jump ball.
oh well, as you pretty much said, it’s to be expected.
As was scheduling the worst team in the tournament by FAR as Nixas opponent in the first round.
that’s how you guarantee your team makes it to the winners bracket of their own tournament. Haha

Agree with your points. If the game is played outside of Nixa the foul count would have been a lot different, doesn’t mean that Nixa still wouldn’t have won. #21 Eliza Maupin of Webster Groves is one of the most impressive players I have seen in awhile. Saw she is going to K State

I agree, it doesn’t mean that Nixa wouldn’t have won, but it does mean that they wouldn’t have gotten roughly 12-15 points from bonus FTs on fouls that were not on attempted shots.
it makes a pretty big difference on a game you win by 7 points.

Maupin was impressive for WG.
Gibbons also shot very well for Nixa tonight at 3 point line and on her numerous FTs.

Seems to me, by the way these teams are seeded, the “expected”4 made it to semis. I thought refs were pretty consistent, WG players are used to a more liberal referee crew due to their location. Nixa hit some big shots down the stretch WG used several fouls during their comeback. They did have two starters that definitely struggled. Comeagle, you said Nixa was the most talented team around so shouldn’t they win that game? Saying they got 12-15 FTs on fouls that were not shot attempt is a stretch.

they went to the line roughly 9 times in the two halves due to the bonus, maybe even 10 times. And the great majority of those were on fouls called with no shot attempt, and since Nixa was knocking down at least 80% of their FTs if not more, is it really that much of a stretch.
Let’s say they got at least 15 FTs from the bonus and double bonus, which I think it was actually more than that, but let’s just use 15.
80% of 15 is 12 makes. So at the least, they got 12 points from bonus FTs, most of which were* on fouls where there wasn’t* a shot attempted.
regardless, it was definitely a difference-maker, but hey, that’s part of it.
I would have to go back and rewatch the game for exact numbers.
looking forward to a good championship match up tomorrow.
Nixa and WP played 3 times last year with WP winning 2 of the 3 and it was a battle every time.

All three refs were females. That might be the first time I’ve ever seen that. The people around me said the same thing.

Not making any inferences here, just thought that was interesting

Thanks for all the math….. I just wanted to see if you would elaborate. One ref being an AD at a rival school and another VERY inexperienced could be bad or good for Nixa so who knows. WG just didn’t seem like a very smart group. Friday night…, maybe all the male refs were busy.

What do you mean?
