Problem is, they still have absolutely no pitching to speak of at this moment

I applaud them for the effort. I think they fall flat on their face

Their top 2 or 3 starters are solid (Davies and Anderson) and they have a good bullpen. They sign Yu or Jake and they would look pretty good. Right now I think these 2 moves keep them ahead of the Birds and if they get a solid starter the Cubs might even be within reach.

Anderson had a career year.....and then hurt his shoulder

Anderson had the oblique injuries that kept him out. Nelson killed his shoulder diving back into 1st base
 
No question, they got materially better overnight, and Yelich gives them payroll room to potentially still add a pitcher.
