Border Crossings in Arizona Down 90% Thanks to Trump Policy

Illegal border crossings in Arizona “plunged” in December of 2019, according to the Associated Press, dropping a staggering 90% year-over-year following a Trump administration change in policy that has asylum seekers waiting for their adjudication hearings in Mexico and not in the United States.

Last winter, a “record number” of illegal border crossers were apprehended in the Arizona sector of the United States-Mexico border, with 60,000 migrants taken into United States Border Protection custody in December of 2019 alone, per the Washington Examiner. That was the beginning of a surge migrants crossing the United States’ southern border; by May of 2019, the Border Patrol was recording a record number of apprehensions every month, sometimes topping 100,000.

“50,753 people were arrested for trespassing from Mexico in December. It marks the third month in a row that more than 50,000 people have illegally crossed into to the U.S. Another 10,000 people who tried to enter through ports were told they lacked the documents to do so,” according to the Examiner. “Illegal immigration apprehensions at the southern border have skyrocketed since Trump’s first few months in office, when 15,000 to 20,000 people were reported being apprehended per month.”

In Arizona alone, the Border Patrol was registering around 14,000 apprehensions per month by May of 2019, but in October of 2019, there were only 800 apprehensions. In December of 2019, the streak kept up, and apprehensions dropped around 90%.

The Border Patrol credits the Trump administration’s new “remain in Mexico” policy, which requires those who want to seek refuge from violence and disorder by emigrating to the United States to stay south of the border until their asylum case comes before a judge. Before that policy took effect, asylum seekers were given a piece of paper with a court date and then released into the United States to stay with friends and family until they had to appear before a judge.

By the time their cases rolled around — sometimes two to three years after apprehension — most asylum-seekers were in the wind, impossible to find, and well-integrated into American life.

“Arrests in the Border Patrol’s Yuma sector nearly hit 14,000 in May, when the policy to make asylum-seekers wait in Mexico took effect there. By October, they fell 94%, to less than 800, and have stayed there since, making Yuma the second-slowest of the agency’s nine sectors on the Mexican border, just ahead of the perennially quiet Big Bend sector in Texas,” the AP reported.

“Illegal crossings in western Arizona have swung sharply before, and there are several reasons for the recent drop. But Anthony Porvaznik, chief of the Border Patrol’s Yuma sector, said the so-called Migration Protection Protocols have been a huge deterrent, based on agents’ interviews with people arrested,” the outlet added.

“Their whole goal was to be released into the United States, and once that was taken off the shelf for them, and they couldn’t be released into the United States anymore, then that really diminished the amount of traffic that came through here,” Porvaznik said.

So far, the courts have largely upheld the president’s policy. In California, a court did order that asylum seekers be provided with access to an attorney before being sent back, and the courts have also suggested that those apprehended by Border Patrol be processed within 72 hours. Some waited “up to a week” in Yuma before being sent on.

I have mostly agreed with Trump on immigration, except for the need of a wall across the entire border. He has done a good job of clamping down. I give credit to increased manpower, which I believe is the best solution. I have never understood why we have stood by for decades and watched millions of illegal immigrants move in and make a home.
Reagan tried by declaring amnesty for illegals already here and henceforth it would not be tolerated. But we forgot to shut the door after Reagan's amnesty. The 14 million illegals here know damn well we are not going to round them up and deport them. I think that last year's big wave was because illegals knew they had to get here before the doors closed.
Eventually, our best hope may be to grant amnesty again to those already here and finally shut the door. Mandate that amnesty recipients register with Social Security and start paying taxes. Pass strict regulations on migrant workers with 6 month work visas. Currently, half of the migrants, or 400,000 workers, do not return to their country after their work visas expire. We have to figure out how to eliminate that loophole across the border.
The article mentioned The Big Bend area as having the lowest entry rate. I'm sure that is a given fact annually with extremely rough terrain for miles. This is one of the areas where it is not financially prudent to build a wall, along with long stretches in the desert. Patrols, drones, and electronic motion detectors could be used in the remote parts. Continue with increasing boots on the ground. Sanctuary cities cannot be tolerated. Strictly enforce laws about hiring undocumented workers and "off the books" workers.
For the record, I am an Independent voter. I have always said, "What part of illegal is so hard to understand?" Trump mostly has done right on immigration, and no other politician has been willing to risk losing Hispanic votes and do what needs to be done - close the border, once and for all, to illegal entry into the US.

Thank you for that well reasoned response.

I agree with your response....The wall was just a Political Talking point to rally like minded behind him. Most clearly understood that a 100 foot wall wasn't going to stretch from Pacific to the Atlantic. Although they are putting up new wall every day.

Well, I'll disagree with your reply. Trumpers fell for his lies - hook, lie, and sinker - that he would build a wall from sea to shining sea, and Mexico would pay for it!! I laughed when he said it. Such bold face lies from this man and apparently Reps either believe him or don't mind.

I don't know many who voted for Trump who felt he would actually build the wall and make Mexico pay for it. All Candidates ts have made promises during the election that everybody knew was not going to happen.

I voted for him believing he would build the wall and has built about as much as possible with available funding. NEVER believed Mexico would fund it directly.

People that backed Trump from 1-10 in give a F

That wall is built and/or illegal border crossings reduced 8.5-10
That Mexico literally pays for it. 1 to 1.5

Ultimately Mexico IS paying for it via actually enforcing their own border security.

Trump is full of hyperbole and blow's everything out of proportion. I get it you dislike him with a emotional bent. Many do. I have always saw Trump for what he is a arrogant womanizing self aggrandizing dbag. But with that said a lot of his policy's align with what I believe and he is willing to hammer away till he get's things done.

I get it you want to make Trump backers out as stupid, lacking in intellect or easily fooled. I could easily say the same thing about Obama supporters who feel for his lies of bring Hope, racial unity, shutting down GitMo, getting out of the Middle east etc etc...but he ended up being the great DIVIDER of Race,Class, parties and never finding a middle ground. He drove Obama voters into the lap of Trump in 2016....Did all of those voters fall for his lies?

New's flash....Politicians Lie during their campaign.....everyone has a Massive Pile of broken campaign promise that are never ever fulfilled.... The difference is that Trump does his with a Blunt hammer and some swagger. Doesn't sit well with some.
