Two Big 8 teams are district champions and they continue the hunt for the state trophy next Saturday afternoon. Who do you pick to win?

Team/Record
-CLASS 2
Lamar (11-0) travels to Ava (12-0)

-CLASS 3
Mt. Vernon (8-4) hosts Eldon (11-1)

Week 12 Scoreboard
-CLASS 2
Lamar defeated Fair Grove, 61-0
Ava defeated Mtn. Grove, 32-6
-CLASS 3
Mt. Vernon defeated Reeds Spring, 30-28
Eldon defeated Owensville, 70-53

Shannon Jolley is Eldon's HC...very good intense coach. I do not believe he has any relation to the team, though. MV will need to be ready to play some physical football. Boys up front will need to play well.

Mt. Vernon (and most of the Big 8 teams) only plays smash-mouth, physical football. MV's line is big and one of the best in the class. Also, MV's coach is a legend that has coached for more years than most assistant coaches and some player parents have been alive.

In the 2012 and 2013 quarterfinal meetings Eldon had with Big 8 teams, the Big 8 teams scored 92 points total to Eldon's 6 points total. HOWEVER, it looks like this year's Eldon team is much better than the 2012 and 2013 teams.

MV has always had the knack of getting red-hot just when you think they are done. If Eldon stops to take a breath, MV will put on a show. It could be a wild second half and should be a great game.

This years team is way better than the 2012 and 2013 versions. Yes they give up some points but offensively they are a threat to score every time the ball is snapped. Great technique line play great team speed 3 kids run a low 11 second 100 meters. Close to 4500 yards rushing and averaging right at 50 points a game. Should be a great game.

Strength of schedule goes to MV for sure. Big 8 one of, if not, the best small conference in state. Coach Cox is a great coach and has them rolling right now. Really clicking.

Not to discredit the stats of Eldon, but if you have a few games of scoring 50+ you will have those high numbers. I would like to know the yardage they've given up in comparison. As I glance at the scores, they have some higher scoring games on both sides. I thought I had read they gave up some 400yards in the last game.

This will probably be a high scoring game both ways. The Mtneers have improved on offense in the last few weeks by running the ball, instead of throwing it 30 times a game. On the other side of the ball, Eldon will find holes in the MV defense, just as most other teams have. MV in a close game.

I saw Eldon play Blair Oaks the week after B.O. lost their starting quarterback (he is back now) it was Eldon's only loss and they were not competitive. Unless they have greatly improved, (possible) they won't hang with the Neers. But, as far as giving up 400 yards to Wyatt freaking Ellis from Owensville, he would probably have nicked MV for a similar #. He has a gun with touch and a set of wheels besides. I know Mizzou has looked at him more than once (haven't offered as far as I know) but this kid is really tough and athletic and a natural for a zone read offense. Point is, don't use that particular 400 yard stat as a real measuring stick.

I find it funny that other teams from the state talk about how the Big 8 team they are getting ready to face better be ready to play some "physical football", as if teams in the Big 8 don't play physical football. What they people outside of the Big 8 don't realize is that Big 8 football is physical week in and week out. Not just for a "big" game, not just for a rivalry game. Heck, even MV who would throw it 15 hundred times a game, has had success with just playing physical downhill football. I'm not saying other schools in the state don't play physical ball, but I often find it funny when other teams play Big 8 teams and say "they will have to play physical". I think the Big 8 knows how to do that.
