Concerned that the status quo will result in the Big 12 Conference falling behind other leagues, on Tuesday the Board of Directors asked commissioner Bob Bowlsby to look into the financial and competitive implications of adding two to four schools in a vote that was unanimous.

Though there is not currently a timetable for expansion, Boren said, as time marches towards 2025, when the current grant of rights will expire, Bowlsby believes it could happen by 2017, when the conference will have to make a decision about divisions as it adds a championship game once again.

And so while the next scheduled Biard of Directors meeting is in October, Bowlsby said a special meeting could have before then, indicating that there is something of an accelerated timetable for the conference.

The teams that have expressed interest, or the conference has expressed interest in are BYU, Boise State, Cincinnati, Colorado State, Houston, Memphis, South Florida, UConn, and UCF, though it sounds like virtually any school could be under consideration at this point.

While a criteria for expansion targets hasn't been set, the Big 12 will look at "strength of athletic program, fan base, media market, reputation and academic standards."

The fact that they voted unanimously is progress. No none of the schools are stellar at this time, but it's a marathon, not a sprint.

Cincinnati, UCF, USF, Memphis, Navy, Tulane, or Temple puts them in huge markets with huge potential fan bases and opens access to outstanding recruiting.

I think they have to expand into the southeast after the addition of West Virginia. Don't see the point of adding BYU, Boise, or CSU and making it a 3 timezone conference, but the Big 12 is disfunctional so who knows?

I personally think the best thing they could do for the conference would be to add Navy, UCF, Cincinnati, and Temple.

What they'll probaby actually do is add Houston, Memphis, BYU, and UConn, because $$$$$.

cinci, Memphis, Houston make sense, in Midwest, boise st would be a great add, but does not make sense geographical,

Don't like Houston in that it continues to dilute the recruiting among Texas schools. Houston is almost assured a spot, just don't agree with it.

Here's what I ask myself.

Would the SEC consider adding those schools for any reason?

The answer is absolutely not.

Downgrades boys.

Well of course the SEC wouldn't consider the majority of these schools for the exact same reason they wouldn't consider Michigan or Ohio State, they're not in or really all that near the south. Why would they want Houston? Texas A&M already covers that area of Texas. Why add Memphis when you already have Tennessee and Vanderbilt? Adding UCF or USF doesn't make sense since they already have Florida covered. Cincinnati, BYU, CSU, Temple, UConn, and really Navy aren't in the south. Again this is about growing programs that could add value. Marathon, not a sprint.

Also, the SEC has a bylaw that prevents them from adding schools from a state that already has an SEC school. (Ole Miss/Miss. St. And Tennessee/Vandy were grandfathered in)

Gimme a break. Memphis, houston, BYU, colorado state. Not SEC caliber. Just that simple. Sure they may win a game here and there but put them in a real conference year after year and they get BEAT down.
