Bench coach Mike Aldrete is leaving to go back to Oakland where he lives and played at one time. Will the Birds promote a minor league guy to that spot or will Mike pick another friend to sit there? Will that guy have any influence with MM and be able to help some of the decisions he makes?

I'm never really sure what the bench coach is there for. I suppose he's just another assistant but they already have a pitching coach, bullpen coach, two hitting coaches, and two base coaches who run the defense too. What does another guy sitting there add to the equation? Heck before long they're going to be like D1 basketball and have more suits than players.

Bench coach generally is the 2nd in command. Hence why he takes over when the manager gets tossed.

He is often the brains of the outfit who can help guide strategy and personnel moves when your manager hasn't coached anywhere but Chesterfield.

Now he's the guy that calls the local replay crew and gives the manager thumbs up to challenge or thumbs down to let it go.

Maybe a change will be good then. At one point the Cards were last in percentage of challenges won.

Well he must not have had a lot of clout or else we wouldn't be talking about MM this much.
