Has anyone heard that MSHSAA is upping the number of games a team can play in a season? I've been hearing that today but can't find a source for that info.

This is how I interpreted the rule change... 26 Games is the maximum number of games a team can play. If you have a team with a 16 game and 3 tournament schedule and they were to get bounced from one or multiple of those tournaments in 2 games, they can pick up extra regular season games to get their total contest total to 26. Which is a change from the past because the rule was based on your set schedule. Previously if you had a team get bounced early from a tournament they were just losing that 3rd game and their total contest number would be lower than teams that play 3 games in their tournament action.

So to answer your question, MSHSAA didn't up the number of games a team can play. They just adjusted their bylaws to allow all teams the opportunity to play in the maximum number of contests.

Here is what was sent regarding volleyball so would assumer basketball will be similar:

As many of you may have been aware, there was an item on the Annual Ballot which will majorly overhaul the guidelines on tournaments as well as contest limitations. I wanted to make you aware that the item passed. The basics are there will be no more contest limits established by the number of season matches and number of tournaments. You should also be advised any tournament that involves abbreviated pool play will count as a contest. So if you play 3 abbreviated matches it will count as 3 contests towards your maximum of 36 for the season. Starting with the 2021-22 school-year the contest limits will be as follows for Volleyball:

High School – 36 contests
Junior High – 18 contests

So in basketball, the number would be 25 total games still? That is the maximum any team could play in the regular season. Old was was 16 games and 3 tournaments= 25 games.

I think the options were 16 games and 3 tournaments or 18 games and 2 tournaments. In some tournaments it's possible to play four games, so it always depended on how many tournaments a team played and what the format was for them. Under the old system I think the number of regular season games could vary from 24 to 28, if a team somehow managed to play four games in three tournaments. It's a good change to allow teams to add games if they get eliminated early from tournaments.

Now, will MSHSAA attempt to balance the number of teams in each district for the girls side next season by creating the girls map first and then fill in the extra teams on the boys side?

Hahaha no chance...

Only way that's happening would be if MSHSAA were to "return to the future" and have separate postseason tournaments for each gender, like it was back in the early 70s with Missouri girls first got the chance to compete for a district (regional, back then) and state title. I would be willing to bet that the big majority of schools have no interest in that whatsoever.
