THE OZARKS
I knew there was a bigger 8-man presence in Kansas, but good lord... I had no idea they had that many teams over there.
I was looking at a post on the Classes and Enrollments in the Harrisonville/Pittsburg thread and according to that link that was posted, I believe they have 64 8-man teams there and two different classes for each??
Not that I like 8 man football at all, I actually despise it, but that's beside the point.

Actually there are 107 8 man teams in Kansas. 50 in Division 1, 49 in Division 2, 7 in Kansas Christian Association and one independent and this year a unofficial 6 man division with 6 teams. The number of 8 man teams has been decreasing for a few years. Out in Western Kansas were towns are getting smaller schools are starting more co-ops
or thinking of going to 6 man.

It's crazy enough to think of football with 8 players, but 6?? Wow lol
Back in late 30s to late 50s was more 6 man than 8 man in Kansas. But back then closer to 1000 schools compared to today under 400. At one point in late 80s early 90s there were just over 100 teams in each division of 8 man in Kansas. Now with schools trying to keep identity instead of co-op are going back to 6 man. Think within 4-5 years will be 20 or more 6 man and eventually 8 man will be one division again. Back in 40s and 50s lot of smaller Missouri schools played 8 man. Grain Valley was one and even Blue Springs. Know one year they played both styles just to get enough games so didn't have to travel far.Texas has over 23 6 man but no 8 man. North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota has a 9 man no 8 man. According t0 NHFS 1161 8 man teams 280+ 6 man teams and 116 6 man. One league in Florida a few years ago tied 7 man for one year.

correct me if Im wrong but I swear I have seen 6 man football banners hanging in gyms in some small schools in NW MO from 1950's.

The Platte Valley League was a 6 man conference before 8 man came in during the late 80s. Union Star, Stewartsville, Breckinridge and four or 5 others.

So did the PVC completely dissolve or just football? Seen most fb teams folded in with Hwy 275 conference.

Another question. Why is it called Hwy 275 conference when none of the orginal schools are on that hwy? Starts west of Rockport and goes north into Iowa and Nebraska.

PVC Dissolved. Entire conference merged with 275. I do know that there used to be about 3 times as many schools in NW Missouri, but through consolidation, it has reduced. The 275 may have been a conference with just schools in extreme NW Missouri and as other schools consolidated, they might have merged with 275 (like PVC did).

It was Highway 275 because the conference started before I-29 was built. 275 was the "Tarkio Road"of Brewer & Shipley fame.
275 was composed of Rock Port, Tarkio, Nodaway-Holt, South Holt, West Nodaway, Mound City, Fairfax, Craig and North Nodaway. When 8-man started in 88, only Rock Port and Tarkio stayed 11-man.
I think South Nodaway, North Andrew, DeKalb, Southwest along with Union Star and Stewartsville were the last members of the PVC that played 6-man. There were other basketball only members.

Brewer and Shipley, man you're really taking it back to the old school Tarkio College days when that town was booming haha. Brewer and Shipley spent a lot of time in Tarkio(obviously).
Glad someone else knows there NWMO history.

Tarkio and Rock Port only stayed in the 275 for Basketball, Volleyball, Track, Cross Country, etc...
They moved to the Grand River Conference for football, where they stayed until they went 8 man in 2010(Tarkio did, I don't think Rock Port went until 2012, but Rock Port was kicked out of the GRC in 04-05, somehwere in there).

Tarkio football no longer exists unfortunately. They now co-op with Fairfax to form East Atchison for football and I think they're co-oping for basketball next year as well.
It's sad. Very nice football facility as far as really small school in NWMO go.
Their stadium probably has more capacity than any other 8-man stadium other than Rock Port I would think.

Highway 275 Conference is at least 60 years old so started about mid 60s as far as I've been able to find out. Platte Valley Conference started 1954 but may have been no football till 1956. Several small leagues started with no football and added later as schools added football.

Officially to MSHSAA they are Tarkio but Their uniforms do say East Atchison.
The field was the college stadium and both shared while the college was going.
Craig and Fairfax had formed one of the first co-ops but unfortunately they both got to small to keep that going so Fairfax to Tarkio and Craig to Mound City.

Oh I know all about it. Kyle Field at Palmeiro Stadium. Tarkio Academy, the juvenile center used the field back whenever they were occupying the old buildings at the college. Supposedly the college is getting renovated and will become active soon as a small community college for gen eds and supposedly a vocational tech type of center for trade schooling and such.

Wish they would just change the name back to Tarkio personally, the enrollment of tarkio is more than double of Fairfax, maybe even triple, not to mention Tarkio has the big football tradition and not Fairfax, but it is what it is.

DeKalb and Southwest were not 6 man schools.
