Home of the Cubs!!
Hey I heard that the advisory board is looking to let 6th graders play in middle school sports? Anybody else hear that?

And if so would they just play up or will they have their own teams?

May be a dumb questions but, don't most schools already have various 5/6 grade activities competing with other schools?

I know in our corner of the state we don't. We have club/travel teams for those grades. I know towns like KC and St Louis don't have even 7/8 grade sports. So I am interested in what others do and think.

Next year we are starting an elite 3U travel team playing 65 games to help your son get ready for competitive sixth grade sports in the Polk County League.

Cost: $17,500 w/o uniform.
With uniform: $22,467
Package that includes travel team fees, uniform and three training sessions with former college dropout and part time jail Bird: $45,897

Funny, but sadly pretty true! A lot of disgruntled former athletes now coaching!

The reason MSHSAA is looking at this is in the past several years a lot of smaller schools that don't have football have dropped MSHSAA membership for their jr high. At a small school in order to have enough kids to play jr high basketball or to have an A and B team they sometimes need 6th or even younger to play and by being an affiliated member instead of full member they can let 5th/6th grade play. Also is costing MSHSAA a little bit of money because it costs less to be an affiliate than it does a full member.

I am concerned with 6th graders being allowed to compete at the JH level and being coached by school approved coaches rather than the All American-All World Pee Wee Champion Might Might Little League All City Wide Championship Caliber living Vicariously through their children Coaches! After all these guys would never lose a HS, College, Professional game if they would only be given a chance!

I’d rather see 9th graders allowed on the 6th grade teams. Nothing like a little domination before you hit varsity.

There are a few programs in STL that have jr high programs, and they all play each other, and then there are "club" teams that play in the gateway or JFL

I’m not sure what I think about with adding 6th graders for football. That’s probably the one sport that needs to be exempt.
JH football does annoy me though. They need to go to 7 games and allow a jamboree. Most youth clubs already play 6+ games

Most don't have 7th grade sports in the KC area. It's all club level/rec stuff. Lee's Summit has a super nice rec league program. Have heard Liberty's is really nice too. Not sure of the others. Some districts have 7/8 buildings, but there are plenty others that have 6-8 buildings. Lee's Summit is has a no tax levy increase on the ballot that will include building a fourth MS building. When it opens (22-23 year) 6th graders will be moved from the elem to the MS. Raytown is 6-8 in MS. Pretty sure most of the KS side in the metro are 6-8 in MS as well. I know BV and Olathe are. Pretty sure SM is too.

Huge difference in physical maturity between 6th graders and 8th graders.
agree 100% also you would be amazed the difference in 7th and 8th graders especially if the 8th graders has a year of intro to strength and conditioning

North Kansas City Schools have 7th/8th football. A number of schools in the KC area have 7th and 8th track. Almost all have 8th grade track, basketball, wrestling, and football.

Lots of schools have 7th grade sports! Independence, Raytown, North KC, Smith Hale, just to name a few

After further investigation, most of the programs I was thinking of are league teams playing under their schools id.
