6 quarters quarters a week rule gone amok

New rule this year by MSHSAA is only allowing a player to play in six quarters a week. It is designed to limit players from playing 4 quarters in a varsity game and then playing another 4 quarters in a J-V game. I'm ok with that rule but I can see coaches not following it. There could also be some situations, especially in the lower classes, where a team may be vastly superior to an opponent and would want to put their J-V in by second quarter but wouldn't be able to if they had a J-V game the next Monday.

But the main problem with the rule is that if a varsity team played a game on Friday and then the next week played a game on Thursday they would be breaking the 6 quarter rule. MSHSAA has told those schools they would not be able to do that this year. They just made the rule this offseason and haven't given a grace period to change school's schedules. Again, I understand the reasoning, but MSHSAA isn't exercising common sense by enforcing it this season.

It won't effect lots of schools, but there are several schools in the suburbs and bigger cities that share stadiums that will have to change their schedules for this year. For example, Truman High School plays a game the second week on a Friday and then play their next varsity game the following Thursday. MSHSAA is telling them they have to change their schedule because of the new rule.

It forced Windsor and Tipton to change their game from Aug. 31st to Sept. 1st. I assume you may see more Saturday games.

The "funny" part is A LOT of teams play home games on Saturdays and away games on Fridays. So what's the difference going Saturday to Friday and Friday to Thursday? Just because that's how MSHSAA set up their week (Fri-Thur)?

And MSHSAA's playoff system has Class 2 and 4 Semifinals on Saturday and Championship on Friday.

CLEARLY there should be an exemption for Varsity contests occurring 6 days apart.

Saturday to Friday is OK since the week starts on Friday. Saturday to Thursday is NOT ok. You would play 4 quarters on Saturday and only 2 available on Thursday.

So if a player who's 2nd string on the varsity plays 4 quarters on the JV Monday night and the starter gets injured in the 1st quarter that Friday, does that mean the backup can only play the first half of the varsity game because he already played 4 quarters earlier that week? If so, does that mean the 3rd stringer or a freshman must finish the game? That could be a problem in the 2nd half of a close game.

week runs from Friday to Friday - so in above scenario the 2nd string kid could play 4 quarters in the varsity game...

Here is the beef from a fly on the wall watching what is happening at small schools. With the current state of football the deck is already stacked against all Coaches & probably even more so for small schools in general. To keep kids interested in playing football, they want to see the field on Friday Nights. So traditionally it has worked out great for small schools with rosters in the 20's & 30's to let those young kids, who earn it, play on special teams on Friday Night. It's a win win for everyone, there are NO negatives about letting young kids see the field at small schools. It is also a legitimate answer to all the player safety issues, by allowing kids that never come off the field to catch a breather and not have to run down the field 40 yards for a high speed collision.

Now with MSHSAA's quest to control every aspect of what a program can and can not do, they have taken control away from a Coach. A Coach with intimate knowledge of his own team and a vested interest in their health, is now hamstrung by a bureaucrats regulation that actually puts kids in harms way, it is a short sighted regulation. I understand, there are coaches that play kids more than they should, that happens and shame on them. I also understand that a kid who gets 20 reps over 4 quarters on a friday night and is needed to be 1 of 6 available O-Lineman for the Monday JV game is NOT playing too much football. JV & JH schedules are constantly in flux at small schools, games are dropped regularly now. Then you throw in the running clock on Friday Night and these kids are playing about 1/3rd of the football JV players did 20 years ago. Who wants to work out year round and go through "twoadays" just to stand on the sideline on Fridays and have games canceled on Monday?

With MSHSAA's mandate to control every aspect of every team and leave no autonomy to the coaches who have dedicated their lives to small school football, they are literally feeding the fire that is destroying the game.

But whats to worry about, in 5 years it will all be gone. Seriously. You will look at class 1a Football in Missouri and there will be a handful of names you'll recognize from 25 years ago. And 2a programs will be folding up tents as well, and all those schools that complain about being the smallest Class 4 & 3 schools will be happy again because they hemorrhaging of programs has just begun.

What about a school like Paris that has 19 guys on the team (7 are freshmen with no experience at all). Even if they only play 11 guys on Friday (everybody goes both ways and everybody plays special teams), that means only 8 guys can play more than a half in the JV game the following Monday. If they have to cancel the JV schedule, that means the freshmen won't get the developmental reps they need on Mondays. Seems like a bad idea for smaller schools.

What if they simply break the rules on Monday? Maybe the game is ruled a forfeit (I doubt it), but even so, at least they played. Or could mshsaa truly intervene and slap some kind of penalty on them? Seems the opposing coach would look away because he'd rather have the game than a cancellation. Feels like in a Paris situation they should just play.

Im curious about that too. Is there a MSHSAA representative on the sideline with a roster, keeping a tally of who plays and who doesnt? Lol

Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't this rule had to be voted in by our AD or Administration? We said it's MSHSAA but our Administration is part of MSHSAA. I hope that our school didn't vote for this.

:p:p:p:pCan I get ahead of the curve and start jumping on Lamar and coach Bailey now.:p:p:p
This does put him, and other coached who are on the positive side of a blow out, in a bit of a pinch. He will be forced to leave starters in longer on Friday night. I guess straight draw plays for most of the second quarter? Will we start seeing freshman or JV games canceled at mid level schools (class 2 and 3)?

Fake news the liberal media and Russian collusion going on MSHSAA. What we need is an investigation.

Here are many teams reality, (assuming the backups are serviceable) 6 offensive linemen to fill 5 spots, 4 Defensive linemen to fill 3 spots, 5 Lbers to fill 4 spots, 1 corner to fill 2 spots, 1 safety to fill 2 spots.
Many a season I operated on this threshold of being a competitive defense, some years it was much thinner.

more likely to count quarters if the same schools play their varsity games Friday and then the JV games on Monday. I don't know what MSHSAA will do if schools are turned in for players doing more than 6 quarters. The people that will turn a school in are the opponents and the parents. If Johnny doesn't play Friday night and then doesn't get to play Monday because a school has kids playing too many quarters, MSHSAA may find out.

I saw there was at least one game in the St. Louis area last night. That means those schools broke the six quarter in a week rule. I know mshsaa made several schools change schedules over Labor Day weekend that wanted to play on Thursday. Apparently the mshsaa rule was more of a suggestion.

MSHSAA does not make the rules. Your coach, your AD, or some other administrator IN YOUR SCHOOL votes on each of these rules. If you don't like it then take your beef to that person. Sometimes in democracy the majority disagrees with you. Deal with it.

And quit blaming MSHSAA who has no control over how your coach or AD votes.
