Perfect scenario. Cards go up 4. Pujols leads off so Hudson/Yadi can feed him a meatball. Hudson has really turned it around and had great control. When he needed to groove one pitch, he put it right where he needed to and everyone went home happy.

I never was a huge Mang fan. That's to say, I didn't fawn over him outside of what he did on the baseball field. I mean, no mistake, in his 11 yrs with the Birds he was the best going. And it was really, really fun to watch. Incredible in fact. But he does a ton for the community and obviously has a passion and stake in the game with all of the work he does with special need kids. I'm telling you, those three days were needed for just about everyone. Albert, the fans, and the rest of baseball. Just a really cool weekend. Bernie summed it up pretty well in this article. Sucks Albert isn't the same. Sucks the Birds aren't the same. One thing I loved about that guy, was how hypercompetitive and hyperfocused he was. I miss that, especially when I see a .500 club super in tune to their celebratory routines and flight wardrobes.

I think that competitiveness is what's been missing since he left. And maybe TLR's too. Those two guys HATED to lose. Chis Carpenter was the same way. They were PO'd when they didn't get it done. Yadi had some of it then but seems to have cooled over time. I'm not sure who else you'd say is even close Waino tries but he just isn't good enough to do it consistently any more.

Matheny took a lot of flack, some rightfully so. But I think he had some of that competitiveness. He tried to push guys. But some didn't like the pressure of having to produce to stay in the lineup. Well, those same guys aren't doing any better now that that pressure has been taken off some. Maybe they just aren't good enough.

That's a big difference between what we've seen out of the Cards lately and what the Blues just showed us. The Note had guys who simply refused to loose. We don't really see much of that attitude from any current Birds. Hopefully it changes and doing whatever it takes to win a game becomes a thing.
