Those groupings actually work out fairly good except if Bolivar had any success under that configuration they will be chastised for beating up on smaller schools and accused of falsifying their enrollment to stay the biggest fish in the pond.

Does MSHSAA or any other entity have a vested interest in keeping, adding or reducing classifications? Do they want more because it's lets more teams have a chance to win or because it is more post season games to charge admission for? Do they want less because it's less to manage? Or is it just what they think makes sense based on the number of schools and the differences between them? Why do some sports have only a few classifications where football effectively has 7? Basketball has only 5 but I would guess that more schools play basketball? Kind of off topic, just curious.

It only takes 5 players on the court for a basketball game. If a small school has 2 or 3 good players they can compete against much bigger schools. Its about fairness. In football most small schools get slaughtered by a platooning, loaded big school. That is why there are more classes.

I think this year 8 man picks up Orrick and Osceola. I don't remember what Greenfield is going to do. Sacred Heart is not doing football this year from what I heard.

I have (early early) put together Week 1 of NWCMO Pick Em and can confirm Orrick is hosting Chilhowee. Schedules this year are a bit tricky with the new cycle but wow are there some fun, new matchups! For the players will be glad to know I have selected TWENTY EIGHT games think that may be a 10-season record for any week!

more schools should go to 8 man. Slater, Paris, Van-Far, Louisiana, Clopton come to mind........

I wish more schools in southeast Missouri would start 8-man teams. You could make (minimum) three good sized 8-man conferences in southeast Missouri.

Highway 25 Conference

Advance
Bell City
Delta
Marquand
Meadow Heights
Oak Ridge
Oran
Woodland

Deep South Conference

Bernie
Campbell
Cooter
Holcomb
North Pemiscot
Naylor
Neelyville

Rural 7 Conference

East Carter
Kingston
Puxico
Scott County Central
South Iron
Southern Reynolds County
Van Buren

Class 3 actually looks competitive in this breakdown.

Class 3 actually looks competitive in this breakdown.

They all do.

Class 5 with CBC, Rockhurst, Blue Springs, Blue Springs South, Jefferson City, Lindbergh, Hazelwood Central, Lee's Summit West, Eureka, Park Hill, Kickapoo, Kirkwood, Lafayette, McCluer North, Liberty, Liberty North, Nixa, Pattonville, Vianney, Staley, Jackson, Fort Osage, Chaminade.

Class 4 is absolutely loaded.

Honestly I think 5 Classes is the best format for a quality playoff, but I also see some definite benefits to (no joke) having ten 32 team Classes.

Under the current regime Class1 of course has the biggest differential, BUT Class 4 has the second largest differential from top to bottom. And the results have shown the bottom quartile of the Class doesn't come close. I would be for going to 5 or go to 7. But right now, Class 4 is a joke.

Idk, but looking at it again, you're right. Class 3 looks stout in that format. Bolivar, Borgia, Affton and St. Clair would make things interesting.

I can understand why Kansas made the weird move of splitting class 4 into 2 divisions. 4a and 4b

Why do you say that? What besides even numbers and shorter playoff road?

If the point is to reward more teams for their hard work and potentially help schools build parity and help programs grow by offering a path to championships and more practice time (through longer playoff runs) that don't run through Webb City, Lamar, or Valle Catholic.

In addition, by shortening the playoff by at least one game you can push the start of the season back. One less game with 110 degree heat indexes is a positive thing.

So in summation:

- reward more teams for their hard work (yes that's socialist, I apologize in advance)

- one less ridiculous heat game (player safety)

- more practice time for more teams through extra playoff games (building programs)

- increased parity (shouldn't see the same champions year after year, and could result in better teams overall)

- one less game, could include one more dead week (let the kids have more of a summer) or more practice time availability (either way is good with me)

Yeah I agree. In the current system class 4 seems like a weird conglomerate of schools with some more similar to those in class 5 along with others more similar to those in class 3. The 5 class system seems to naturally break in pretty good groupings.

Keep in mind this was my explanation for ten Classes of 32(ish) teams.

But yeah, 5 breaks up pretty well and (should) be competitive.

- one less game, could include one more dead week (let the kids have more of a summer) or more practice time availability (either way is good with me)
10 seems like too many for a state this size but I can't disagree with the points you make. I like the idea of seeing more parity and different schools in the big game but the reality of the day is that the same handful of schools are going to continue to win most of the championships no matter how the system is designed.

Totally dig the idea of shedding a hot august game.

Like I said before, I don't have a huge issue with the current 6 class system other than I think class 4 breaks very unnaturally but it is what it is. Personally I think 5 classes makes more sense but 7 would be fine as well if we want to see a few more teams on the big stage. Some states smaller than Missouri have that many classifications. I believe the largest class in Oklahoma only has 16 or maybe 8 teams. Many of our neighboring states have only a few large schools and a ton of very small to medium sized schools.

I'm ok with the current 6 class system though I believe class 6 should be a 48 and class 1 should be the catch all. I think it would really balance out the classes
Can someone with either more time or enthusiasm than I make a list with this breakdown?

MSHSAA lists their current enrollment as 1828. 2500 would probably be under the old format. 914 would be split down the middle and would put them tied with Platte City Platte County

Where is this listed on Mshsaa's site. I have looked for it and can't find it

MSHSAA lists their current enrollment as 1828. 2500 would probably be under the old format. 914 would be split down the middle and would put them tied with Platte City Platte County
Jeff City will still actually be Class 6 this year with their enrollment staying in the 2500-2600 range. When Capital City opens the 2019-2020 school year it will only be freshman and sophomores. The 2020-2021 school year it will be freshman, sophomores and juniors. So the schools won't be evenly split until the 2021-2022 school year, by that school year there is a projected enrollment of 2600-2700 students in both high schools combined. So enrollment will try and be split as evenly as possible, so somewhere between 1300 and 1350, give or take a few depending on how even they can split the schools.

A 1.85 size differential in Class 4...STILL. Not quite twice the size...but almost. How about classifications actually based on size? Don't worry about the # of schools.
