A local school has a policy where if a player gets a technical foul he has to sit out four quarters. Is that common?

becoming more common.
Coaches used to sit them the whole NEXT game (if their school or program even did that)....but the 4 Q thing starting from the quarter they got the T has become more common.

I do not agree with that but there needs to be some punishment that maybe doesn't affect the rest of the team. If there was no punishment then some players would keep getting them. I help coach a HS team one year and the HC put the player that got the "T" in a chair at half court while the rest of the team ran. That did not work.

There have to be consequences for your actions. If a kid getting a technical gets punished and effects the team, maybe some peer pressure from their teammates will get them to knock it off.

If one of our kids gets a technical, they sit the rest of the game. If they get 2 technical in the season then they sit out that game and the next game. Plus if you get detention or iss, then you don't dress out for the next game. It's cost us some games but that's just the way it is.

How many quarters is the coach out if he gets a technical?

It woud seem to me that an adult should be able to exert more control over their emotions and behavior than a kid.
So basically what you are saying in this post is that your kid, or a kid you are somehow attached to, got a technicks and had to sit 4 quarters, and you don’t like it.

Here is the deal. Do not put it in writing. I treat each T per case. I kid deserves the T most likely not playing the rest of the game depending on situation. Say he goes up for a shot, gets hit by defender (which gets an intentional foul) and retaliates and pushes kid and gets a T? Sit him for a while, talk with him and play him. I seen a kid this year, toss the ball in the direction to be taken out and was called for a Technical because he didnt toss it to the ref. No way do I sit a kid for that. I have had refs apologize for giving a kid a T after the fact. I saw an opposing player get a T during the game. after the game I find out it was because it was something my kid had said to him. I would not have wanted the kid to sit out in that situation at all. So take each situation and handle it the right way is what you can do. If done right and expectations are set, usually no problems arrive.

Webb City's best player received 2 technicals last night and was elected. Next game is 1st round of districts.

That's not good for them.. under the scenario above he would miss a couple of games... I am assuming that will only miss the one required by MSHSAA.

That’s a different situation. Ejection is automatic game suspension
It may be more in this situation though. The player in question did not leave the playing area in a timely manner and had to be prompted to exit the bench after all 4 free throws were shot. He then removed his jersey before returning to the locker room. Carthage had a similar situation a few years ago where a Junior player was sent off during a Sectional Championship loss in a soccer game and also refused to leave the field in a timely manner while having some choice words as well. That player missed about 3-5 games to start his senior season, but I'm not sure if this decision was from MSHSAA or if it was self-regulated by the school.

I'm not sure, but it's likely that the rivalry between the two teams played a factor; I don't think we would have seen this in a nonconference game against Lamar. Likewise, the Carthage soccer incident took place in the last five minutes of a 6-1 Sectional Championship loss at home against Glendale.

I am not sure if this will impact anything but this player was suspended during the football season for 4 games.

I believe the player was in the locker room before played resume. The officials should have made him exit before the free throws were attempted if that is the rule. I would think any games additional to the one mandatory would be based on school policy. It’s district play so assuming they can win one game I bet he plays the next one.

Yeah they would win the 1st game without him but not the 2nd so there is your answer.

Late to the party here but a player that receives two technicals is disqualified. They are not ejected and may stay on the bench as long as they are not causing more problems.

Actually I don’t have kids, and don’t know any kids.

You took a point that had merit — about how many coaches who preach discipline for their players practice none themselves — and made inferences and assumptions about someone you don’t know.

Perhaps, I struck a nerve.

Either way, if you’d rather make inferences and assumptions instead of an adult debate, then by all means. …

It sounds like you view getting Technicals a lot like how you view drinking and driving and sending nudes — okay if an adult does it. Bad if a minor does it.

Wow, took two weeks to come up with that reply?

Every situation is different, but there is never a situation where a player should get a technical and not be disciplined In some fashion. I have zero issue with a player sitting out 4 quarters for a technical.

Adults are different and should be treated as such. Coaches have a responsibility to advocate and stand up for their players. Are there situations where a coach should be disciplined for receiving a technical? Absolutely.
