I know we're just a week in, but no discussions!?! New coaches, contenders in the 4 classes, good jamborees to attend, predictions? Here are a few KC area few topics to get you going: St. Teresa's looked very tough again over the summer (my early Final 4 pick from KC class 4), Hanaway to Lees Summit (can she turn around a perennially solid but under-performing program), Blue Springs South and Pleasant Hill (both lost a lot, and both have some studs stepping up to take over), Santa Fe and Northland Christian (can they keep the class 1 title in KC?), Blue Springs South Tourny (drops Cor Jesu and adds Lafayette, is this the toughest tournament in the midwest?)

Class 4 I think will come down to STA and St Joseph Academy this year. I don't think Lafayette has the fire power to contend for the title this year.

Class 3 will come down to Pleasant Hill and Helias.

Class 2 will be the same 2 in the title hunt. Hermann and Pius with Strafford maybe knocking one of them off.

Class 1 will be a battle and I know more about this class than the others. Northland Christian and Santa Fe will battle to make it to Cape. You also have New Haven that has a pretty easy path to state. Winona/Eminence will battle it out in the weakest sectional in Class 1. Then you have the stacked SEMO sectional with several teams that could make it to state. Valle will be the favorite to return to state in that area. You also have Advance that will return most of the team. You have to add in other teams as well. Lesterville, Leopold,Bismarck, St Vincent, Bernie are some of the other teams that could make serious noise in the SEMO sectional.

I love this time of year. Should be another great high school volleyball season.

Oh yea Hannaway will have LS in the playoffs within 3 years.

Probably a mistake to count Lafayette out.
Helias is loaded
All 3 teams you mentioned could be in the final 4 I'll take Strafford
If Valle makes it out of their district they win it all
Much can happen between now and November, but should be another exciting season across the state.

JustwonderingNkc, I agree with your assessment of Class 1. Northland Christian has returned all their starters, they are heavy on the Senior front and they want to prove to the State that last year was not a fluke. Santa Fe is tough and with their hard hitting lefty they will definitely be in the hunt for the Cape. Not sure what Valle has added, I know they lost 3 senior starters, hopefully they will be able to fill those spots. Winona and Eminence are always full of talent. Look forward to the upcoming weeks to see how things play out. Enjoy the season, I am sure there will be more chatter.

Winona beat Eminence in 2 rather easily from the looks of the scores. This weekend at the Cape SEMO tourney should give a good idea how some of the Class 1 teams will be. Winona, Eminence, New Haven, Lesterville are in the field.

That should be an interesting tournament with the new format.

Could you outline the new format for me?
I believe that they have tried to match the teams up so the competition would be more equal when they assigned teams to pools. I believe you can find the pools in the Southeast Missourian. They used to pool weaker teams in with stronger teams and that has changed.

The schedule has been released for the 30th annual Dig for Life Challenge varsity volleyball tournament.

The 52-team event is scheduled to take place Sept. 8-9 at Notre Dame Regional High School, Show Me Center and Southeast Missouri State Recreation Center in Cape Girardeau.

A new format has been adopted for this year’s tournament.

The 2017 tournament will be divided into a Red Division and Black Division. There are 24 teams in the Red Division and 28 teams in the Black Division.

All teams have been placed into pools of four and are guaranteed a minimum of five matches at the two-day event. A team’s performance in its first three pool play matches determines who it will face in its pool play challenge round to determine its placement in single elimination bracket play.

A total of 16 teams qualify for the gold bracket in both divisions with the remaining teams qualifying for the silver bracket.

The teams finishing first and second in each pool are guaranteed to qualify for the gold bracket.

Teams finishing third or fourth in each pool will be ranked based on the point ratio from their pool play challenge match and seeded accordingly from the highest point ratio to the lowest.

The following will be used to determine a team’s finish in pool play:

1. Sets won/lost

2. If a tie exist the head to head result between the teams tied.

3. If a tie still exist the points allowed and points scored differential between the teams tied in pool play

4. If a tie still remains a one point set to 15 points will be played to break the tie.

The four teams with the highest point ratio in the red division will receive the four at-large bids in the gold bracket with the remaining eight teams qualifying for the silver bracket. The two teams with the highest point ratio in the black division will receive the two at-large bids in the gold bracket with the remaining twelve teams qualifying for the silver bracket.

If a tie occurs on point ratio, gold or silver bracket placement will be determined by a playoff set to 15 points between the tied teams. If a tie occurs on point ratio but does not eliminate a team from qualifying for the gold bracket then a flip of a coin will determine the bracket placement.

So how big is class 4? I ask because Carl Junction is class 4 but so are Joplin and Kickapoo.

Class 1 update from last night. Northland Christian beats defending Kansas 2A State Champions Heritage Christian 3-1 in a best of 5 format. It was a great match and one that I would want to see again.

Will update from the Weekend. Northland Christian wins the Platte County Invitational. Split with Summit Christian, beat Winnetonka and Belton in Pool Play. Beats Smithville (Qtrs), Park Hill (Semi's) and Platte County (Finals)
Goes 11-1, not bad for Class 1 School.

Advance, Valle Catholic and Lesterville are turning out to be the top teams in Class 1 in Southeast Missouri. Valle was undefeated until they played in a tournament in St. Charles last weekend and lost to John Burroughs in three sets and then fell to Francis Howell Central. I'm 99.9 percent sure that those will be the three teams that make it to sectionals in Class 1 (the other district in the Bootheel doesn't matter because they are on an entirely different level of volleyball down there. I've seen some junior high teams in my area that could beat some of those varsity teams. That's not hyperbole: that's truth).

Advance (10-4) is in District 2 and Bernie is the only team that stands to give them any competition, and the Hornets have easily beaten the Mules twice already this season. Bernie (6-7-1) lost most of its talent from last season and they have a new coach this year whose priority is basketball and not volleyball, so that really sucks for them. They're still decent/mediocre with a couple of natural athletes, but I see no reason why Advance shouldn't win District 2. The Hornets are loaded with younger talent and start two freshmen and a sophomore.

Lesterville is in District 3 and their record of 13-5-1 is kind of deceiving because looking at it, most of the teams they've beaten aren't very good. Leopold (9-9-2) is the only other team in that district that can give the Bearcats a good game, but the Wildcats are down this season and are very inconsistent. Coach Betsy Middleton will find a way to make sure the Bearcats win it.

Valle Catholic (12-2) will win District 4, no doubt about that. St. Vincent (8-10-2) could give them a run for their money (they've played each other once already and Valle won in three sets), but I still think the Warriors have more depth and veteran Coach Nancy Fischer see to it that the Warriors pull it out in the end. Hey, what the heck happened to Bismarck?! They are usually one of the best teams in the area and their record now is 3-11?! I know that their legendary coach Paula AuBuchon retired and North County's old coach is their coach now, but that's quite a change. I know they did lose the Henson girl and their other big hitter whose name eludes me.

I haven't seen Winona or Eminence, but I'll see Winona this coming weekend in the Perryville Tournament. This tournament is shaping up to be one of the toughest tournaments in our area. If any of you want to see some of the top talents in Southeast Missouri, I implore you to come to Perryville this coming Saturday (I'll post the schedule in a separate thread).

Class 2, all eyes are on Bloomfield. They're 17-2 and have only lost to Class 3 powerhouse Dexter (three sets, for what it's worth) and dropped a very close game to Saxony Lutheran in the SEMO Classics/Dig for Life Challenge (it had to have been a fluke. Saxony is decent but no reason why Bloomfield should have lost that game). Arcadia Valley also has a pretty impressive record (16-2-1 with losses coming to Dexter and New Haven). I do think Bloomfield could get past St. Pius X (Festus) this year in sectionals, especially since the Lancers are now without Jena Otec.

Class 3, obviously Dexter is the top team in Southeast Missouri. Their record (16-4) is pretty impressive considering that they are without their best player (senior Kyrsten Garrison, who tore her ACL over the summer at camp and won't be back on the court until midway through basketball season). I've watched them play and their big middle Hannah Thurmon is a good player, they also have a strong outside hitter in Addie Kruse, and their little setter Bailee Williams is quite possibly one of the best setters I've seen around here in a long time. The Bearcats are on a 12-game winning streak and they haven't lost a game since August 28 when they fell in three sets to Farmington. Dexter also has a good coach in Carmen Morgan who doesn't tolerate any BS and she knows how to make her teams win. I'm 95 percent sure that they'll beat Notre Dame (Cape Girardeau) in districts and they could make a deep run in sectionals now that Lutheran South is without Leketor Member-Meneh standout.

Class 4, eh, not really worth discussing because none of our big schools down here can compete with the St. Louis privates that always dominate in the postseason.

Haven't been on here in a while but I'm delighted to see that the volleyball chatter is picking up this season!

I agree on all counts fanatic. I think Ste. Gen will be a player in the 3A conversation as they have been competing well without 2 of their starters for most of the year. They are both due back in the near future. Should be some great VB the rest of the year.

Some great info. on the forum! Here are a few of my random observations, emphasis on the KC area.

Class 1 - Northland Christian is really dominating. I'm not saying they can't be beat, but I'd be very surprised in class 1.

Class 2 - No contenders in KC. LeBlond has a good record with a weak schedule. I hear great things about Strafford, but don't be misled by Pius' record. They play a TOUGH schedule and will be ready for state.

Class 3-I feel sorry for Helias or Rogersville. 1 and 2 in the state and stuck in the same quarter. Helias should come out, but I thought the same thing last season. Borgia and Lutheran South have great shots as well out of StL. Pleasant Hill out of KC again, but don't overlook Pius. Pleasant Hill beat them 2-0, but it was a decent match

Class 4-Lafayette or St. Joe, flip a coin for who makes it, and there's your probable champ. KC has a great chance to bring 2 teams for once. St. Teresa's out of the city, and Blue Springs South who heads to the Springfield sectional (if they can beat Ozark/Nixa/Kickapoo or whoever makes it).

Thanks for the info about Ste. Genevieve. I know they typically have a strong program and I see where they beat St. Pius X in three sets. Big win there for the Lady Dragons.

EagleBabe, As I am just familiar with Northland Christian, they will have a great test coming up in the Truman Tournament. There are a lot of Class 3 and 4A teams at this tournament. They also have a great match coming up on Thursday night against Park Hill South. And yes they can be beat, Santa Fe(Alma) is rolling thru their conference like hot knife thru butter....

I heard a rumor Winona is down to just 5 players with 3 others hurt. Waiting to see if they play at the Perryville tourney or not. I heard they were waiting to see if 1 of the 3 hurt kids could make it back by the end of season.

I've got to say that Pius will be tough to beat. They don't play a cream puff schedule at all. I think they make it back to state this year. I've watched both Bloomfield and Pius play this year and I give the edge to Pius. I give the edge to Pius in setting, defense, middles and 1 outside over Bloomfield. Playoffs anything can happen.

Dexter and Lutheran South would be a battle. I watched Dexter at the Borgia tourney and it sounds like they are improving fast. LS has a very strong outside attach and the setters can spot on. The setters also can pound the ball like crazy. LS defense is sick. LS has a very high risk high reward serving game. LS schedule is a lot harder than Dexter. 1 common opponent for each is St Dominic. STD handled Dexter easily at Borgia while LS spanked STD. Again playoffs are crazy and I would love to see new blood at state.

Two big shake-ups tonight in the world of Southeast Missouri volleyball:

Class 1 Valle Catholic defeats Class 2 Arcadia Valley 23-25, 25-21, 25-17. The Lady Warriors improve to 14-2 while the Lady Tigers drop to 16-3-1.

Class 1 Advance defeats Class 2 Bloomfield 19-25, 25-23, 25-17. The Lady Hornets improve to 12-4 while the Lady Wildcats fall to 18-3. The loss snapped Bloomfield's nine-game winning streak.

All four teams will be competing at the Perryville Tournament this weekend. Wouldn't be surprised if these were the four teams that make the semifinals.

I would think that they would bring up JV kids before they would drop out. Could be that their JV have maxed out on tournaments played

Per MSHSAA, they have a full JV schedule listed (but that usually never means anything). If they really did drop out, I'm not sure how that'll affect the tournament on Saturday. You can only play in three tournaments (excluding districts), and most other nearby teams that aren't in the tournament have already played (or about to play) their three tournaments. They'll probably enter their freshman team (Perryville) or maybe pull a team from across the river like Chester. I know they play the Yellowjackets in a lot of other sports and even participate in a boys basketball tournament over there. It's only about 15 minutes from Perryville, but not sure what the governing rules are for tournaments in Illinois. Looking at the schedules of some other teams in the area, so far I've discovered that Crystal City, Grandview (Hillsboro), and Valley (Caledonia) have room on their schedules for another tournament, but I'm not sure if that'll affect some of their other regular-season games with the limit of games a team can play before Districts. But if Winona really did drop out, they would probably have to find another good team and save for Grandview, Crystal City and Valley are not good this year. Who knows!

I'll check around and see if there's a revised schedule. Thanks for the heads up about this, guys.
