That season began when they hired new coach Mark Bernsen. He SHOULD succeed, at least this coming year, with a stable full of thoroughbreds!
He's in a much better position than new coach Cotton was, coming in with an almost empty cupboard to begin 1958-59 (and still finished 3rd in R16)
Let's all get behind Mark and show our support!

Funny you should mention Cotton in this thread Grey3dog. I was thinking of him last week. Seems I read that when Cotton was hired to replace Maury John there was a lot of opposition to him. The fans of course remembered his playing days at Hannibal-LaGrange. They considered him cocky and arrogant. Cotton was very good, and he would rub it in on the Moberly fans. Didn't he have the nickname "The Moberly Tormentor?" Of course, once he got to Moberly and the fans saw that super personality and got to know him all was forgotten. After a so-so first year he began having the same success on the court that Maury John had, and of course that helped also.

Yes, the Moberly Tormentor was not well received at first! But Cotton won them over! You and me must be about the same age!
Maybe Bernsen can win them over, let's hope so.
YOu DO KNOW Cotton is battling cancer, correct?

I had been wondering about Cotton's health. There was a reference on here awhile back I believe something about a problem with a lung. Sure hate to hear that. Let's all keep Cotton in our prayers. What a terrific guy and what a great ambassador he has been for Moberly and Juco basketball, actually for basketball on every level he's been. He has come back to Moberly for the Booster Club golf tournament I believe about every year it has been held.

I did not know about Cotton battling cancer. My prayers are with him. He coached me in little league baseball and I would have ran through a wall for him. No other individual affected me in that way.

It's an article by Pete Vescey of the NY Post.

Thanks for info Steve. Do you have an e-mail address for Cotton? I would like to get in contact with him.

No, Step, I dont...I wish I had it! Perhaps try DONALDHROBB@msn.com
Don was our classmate and the manager of the team during the Cotton years. He may have a way to get in touch with Cotton. Don lives in Kansas City and works as Pres. of a mattress firm. He is there now setting up a new factory.
