They played on Labor Day in 1975 in front of a national TV crowd. Mizzou won 20-7 over a team that had not lost a regular season game in 2 years, Two defensive ends from small town NW Missouri played a big part in that game. Can you name them?

There were some super future NFL players on that team on offense. Marshall, Gal breath, Winslow, etc. But I don't think I can remember one player from the defense.

seems like one of the kids was from Gallatin and I think he was a converted qb ?
Morrisey sp ? I'm not for sure of the other player.

I sure remember hearing that one on radio. Back in the 1970s Mizzou was the team nobody wanted to face coming out of the gate................also beat USC in LA in 1974 and Notre Dame in 1972 3-0 if I remember correctly. They also beat #1 Nebraska in 1978 forcing an OU-NU rematch in the Orange Bowl that season.

And don't forget they upset mighty Ohio State. What a game that was.

In 1976, Mizzou beat USC, Ohio State and Nebraska all in the same season. And even crazier than that they went 6-5.

I believe that was an ABC game played on Monday night? Also seem to recall Keith Jackson on the pxp. That was a glorious game as a Mizzou fan.

The week after we pummeled USC in LA we lost at home to a below average Illinois team 31-6. That was a crazy season. Ended up losing in the last game to ku and not even making a bowl game. I wonder if any team has ever beaten USC, Ohio St and Nebraska in the same season and not made a bowl?

I still remember those 3 wins you mention so vividly.

Curtis Brown ran wild over the Trojans in the USC win...and had a KOR td.

Pete Woods hit leo lewis with a td pass and then fan a qb option for the 2 pt conversion and win over Ohio St and Woody Hayes in Columbus.

Woods connected with Joe Stewart on a 98 yard td bomb on a play-action pass out of his own end zone that broke the game open in the win over the huskers.

Great memories.

Mizzou beat ND, 3-0, in 1978. And, Nebraska was #2 when they were beat by Mizzou in the same year. Nebraska lost to OU in the Orange Bowl and finished at #8 - OU finished at #3.

Here is some more detailed info about the 1972 and 1978 seasons:

Mizzou 1972 season: finished 6-6 but did defeat #8 Notre Dame (30-26), #7 Colorado (20-17), and #12 Iowa State (6-5). Six of their 12 games that season were against Top 15 -ranked teams.

Mizzou 1978 season: On September 9, 1978, Mizzou faced the 1977 National Champions, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish with QB Joe Montana. It was the first home game of the season for the #5 ranked Irish; Mizzou was unranked. The Mizzou defense was all over the Irish. The Mizzou LBs and DBs were like hornets everywhere. One of the DBs that kept Joe Montana in check was Larry Lauderdale (from Cassville). After the 3-0 major upset win for Mizzou, they broke into the rankings at #11. The 1978 season saw the Mizzou team face #5 Notre Dame, #1 Alabama, #1 Oklahoma, and #2 Nebraska (who Mizzou also upset 35-31). The Tigers finished the season at 8-4 and ranked at #15.

Mizzou was the favorite in that game. Mizzou was ranked #5 and Alabama was ranked #13.

Those were the rankings AFTER the game was played and Mizzou won. Pre-season poll had Bama #2 and Mizzou unranked.

You are correct, Fort. That defeat goes to show that pre-season polls are largely useless.

It was on ABC. Just like this year, the NFL started the next weekend so the Mizzou-Bama game was the Monday Night Football Game.
In 1972, they opened at home against Oregon. After finishing 1-10 the previous year, they wound up beating the Ducks - QB by Dan Fouts - on a FG at the end of the game by Greg Hill. They later beat Notre Dame 30-26 a week after losing to Nebraska 62-0. The years under Uncle Al were a roller coaster.

The energy they used to win those probably led to that record. I remember listening to some of these games on radio and the announcers were as puzzled as everyone else.
